Drowning Escom employee causes national black out

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) on Saturday effected an emergency load shedding across Malawi as divers tried to the body of the power utility’s employee who had drowned at Nkula A pool.

Escom spokesperson Kitty Chingota confirmed the drowning of the employee and the emergency load shedding.

“The emergency load shedding was indeed effected to enable divers recover the body,” she said.

She however could not disclose the identity of the employee saying the company was yet to inform his next of kin of the death.

However she said he drowned whilst on duty.

In Nsanje, a 37 year old lines man for Escom has been electrocuted to death.

Police in Nsanje said George Mamawa died on Sunday after touching a live wire without protective gear, gloves.

This is the second incident this year that Escom employee has died through electrocution.

It simply shows they do not have an effective health and safety department. To the grieving family please Escom with a Billion law suit, maybe just maybe they can start protecting it’s employees.

We seem to be behind when it comes to safety in Escom. We cant afford to be losing employees like this. Its unacceptable. Minister please do something here.

This is total shame to escom big company. Please train and follow up all standards of safety. Please retire those who re old or unhealthy due natural disease or alcohol.

I am yet to comprehend how unsafe Escom workplace environment is. Can ESCOM please tell us how difficult it is to manage environmental safety health and housekeeping isues

What a foolish country..
Still after 50 years of self rule you still can’t fix the problem
of having decent electricity this while ALL those going in
Government go there ONLY to steal and enrich themselves
while even sleeping on the job in the Parliament.
