Police deputy spokesperson at police headquarters in Lilongwe, Tomeck Nyaude confirmed the arrest of Reubin Kaunda, Nelson Mpinganjira and another police officer after they were found with the ivory.

“Police officers are trained to fight crime not to commit a crime,” said Nyaude.

He said the three police officers would be taken to court as soon as investigations are over.

Nyaude said the police would not condone police officers serving their own personal interests instead of interests of the state which include protection of life and property.

The police have of late been embroiled in a spate of robberies and some of them are accused of lending their uniforms and guns to thugs.

Some commentators attribute the lack of displine in the police to the recruitment process as children and relatives of senior officers are picked leaving out deserving Malawians.
