19 people commit suicide in Dowa this year: Malawi Police worried

About 19 people have committed suicide in Malawi central region district of Dowa since January this year, a development that has worried the police.

Just over the weekend, two people – both men – from the areas of Traditional Authority Chakhaza and Mponela have committed suicide.

The main reasons – according to Mponela publicist Kondwani Kandiado – are family misunderstandings and frustrations.

Said Kandiado: “We  strongly feel that these issues can be prevented only if people patronize our Police Victim Support Unit (VSU) which among other things deals with family problems and other cases.”suicide-risk

He added that apart from the police, people can also present their grievances to the district social welfare office or religious leaders for proper counseling services.

“It is quite regrettable that such suicide cases are robbing the country of youthful citizens who could have contributed to the development of the country,” he said.

Nyasa Times has learnt that on Sunday evening one of the two people who committed suicide over the weekend, Botomani Wiseman, hanged himself in a tree close to his father’s house after failing to reconcile with his wife whom he divorced a few months ago.

Wiseman, 27, hailed from Kasalika Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mponela in Dowa.
