3 TV stations bid for Super League rights:  Zodiak and MBC sent back

Zodiak and MBCTV missed out in the bidding process of 2016 up to 2019 Super League of Malawi (SULOM) television broadcasting rights after their documents failed to meet deadline on Thursday at Sulom’s offices in Blantyre.

Instead, Times Group, Beta Television and Matindi Television were the only three media houses that submitted their bidding documents to Sulom.

First to arrive was a representative from Times Group before Matindi and Beta before the deadline time which was 3, o’clock in the afternoon.

Zodiak representatives arrived five minutes after the actual time before MBC which was late by 24 minutes. The two media houses were told to go back with their documents since they failed to arrive at the agreed time.

MTV bid is at a price of K37.5 million, Beta TV bid price is at K266 million, while Times TV bid price is at K149.3 million.

Sulom treasure Tiya Somba Banda said it is good to note that the three media houses are serious with commercialization of Malawi football.

“We have note that some have even put bid up to K266 million which is something that has never happened in the history of Malawi football. I believe we are going in the right direction,” said Banda.

He also said at first there were five companies who bought the bid document but unfortunately only three submitted their documents after making it on 15 hours which they agreed.

“The other two Zodiak and MBCTV came in late and the rules say by 15 hours that is only when we can receive the bid documents.  So for Zodiak and MBC they arrived late and we had no option,” he said.

However, it was surprising that despite Zodiak being housed in the same offices where Sulom operate   at Delamare House they could not make it on time.

i undestand beta tv have a state of art equipment Outside Broadcastin (OB) van with 7 camera platform which is similar to that of giant supersport and SABC sport have. Therefore, a Sulom be careful popereka lincece chifukwa si nkhani yomajambulira kamera imodzi kumatipangitsa chizungulire tikamaonera mpira ife iyi. nanga camera yomweyo ajambulire masapota, yomweyo mpira, yomweyo etiso slow motion. Ife poona kumawona ngati mpira wa ku Malawi siukoma yet ndi majambulidwe amene amavuta. For Zodiak tv and MBC tv hopefully you have to be fast next time bcoz this is not Malawi of 3 decades ago zinthu zasintha ma member tiyeni tivomereze. inu a Matindi tv bid mwaikayo osamationetsa phale mwakhala mukuonetsa ayi, inu a Beta tv tinamva muli ndi van koma sitinaonerepo mpira mutanjambula therefore SULOM be careful. LET THESE TV STATIONS WHO APPLIED FOR TV RIGHTS BE GIVEN PRACTICAL SESSIONS. LET THEM COVER THE ONE MATCH LIVE ON THEIR STATIONS ARE REVIEW THEIR COVERAGE. DONT JUST BE FOOLED BY WHAT THEY PROMISE.

    PLEASE!!!!!!!!

  7. BETA says:

Failing to pay staff salaries for 5 months does not mean Beta cant do football. Tipatseni mpata muone ntchito zamanja athu. Ikanakhala Zodiak ndi MBC ndiozitsata sibwenzi ataphonya nthawi. 9. Mkamwini says:

Tima digital camera tiwirito peyapeya you want to buy football broadcasting rights!!! If Sulom wants to sell this, the bidders have to show the equipment they have to shoot football matches. If not, there should be agreement to buy the equipment. You can’t use those cameras you use ku chikwati or presidential diary then basi you think you can shoot live footbball. Equipment first, bidding later. Enough is enough, too much garbage on Malawian Television. Luso TV is the most pathetic. Macra ikutichititsa manyazi. Dont give licences to impress people, there should be guidelines before awarding TV licences…… Proper studio, proper lighting, sound engineers etc osati basi kungotengana mmakwalalamu nkumati lets go edit. TOO MUCH GARBAGE ON MALAWIAN TELEVISION STATIONS. The only TV station which knows what it is doing is Zodiak, followed by Times (improve on graphics please). MBC and Luso tv should be revoked of their licences, akutichititsa manyazi.

BETA is is in for serious busines. They know what it means and they have the only facility in country for football coverage. Mpiratu sitimajambula ngati mukujambula chikwati. It needs proper equipment and in this country, it is only BETA TV that has that facility

  12. Bima Matheza says:

Keep it up, time is money and use it wisely

  13. Sulom says:

Beta has failed to pay staff salaries for 5 months. How will they get K266m? Maybe miracle money from Simama?

  15. Communicator Aub says:

Why is it that we are so bound to rules and time? Let us all abandon this time commodity thing and venture into something that will develop this nation. Time is just some numbers which some people coined so why should it be deciding factor of our actions? I have seen how most people misunderstand the concept of time. You try to go to their office and you are late with 2 minutes, they will shout at you: “you are late, blah blah blah”

  16. Kambiya boy says:

Zodiak yo ndi imene imayenera kugwira ntchito imeneyi koma chifukwa chakuchedwa, palibe option ina yoposa kulephera, keep it up SULOM enawa amajaira zinthu

  19. Che Wanimiliyoni says:

With due to those who submitted on time I still think its those whose bids were rejected i.e. MBC and Zodiak who have the technical, commercial and marketing ability to beam Super League matches. For instance MBC is on analogue, clear clear, GOtv and DSTV platforms so to deny them opportunity to beam local matches is like confining Malawi football audience to only Malawi cities for 3 years. Also these two stations, in my opinion, are the only ones who can easily afford to commission another channel so that they beam two live games at once. As it stands I dont see MBC or Zodiak buying broadcasting rights from any company which will be awarded the contract which means for 3 years we are guaranteed a maximum of only 3 live games at once. Just to cement my plea to have MBC and Zodiak added in South Africa or England they dont give these rights to every jim and jack. In South Africa if it is not Supersport then its SABC or both and in England if its not BBC then its Sky.
