4 Malawian models picked for Southern African Fashion Week

Malawi’s modeling industry has received a boost as the country’s models have been selected to participate at this year’s Southern Africa Fashion Week in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The upcoming fashion week is part of the Southern Africa Fashion Conference (SAFC) to be held from 30 April to 01 May, 2014.

This year SAFC goes into its third season and will feature models from Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland.

From Malawi, SAFC has picked four models namely Thembi Zimba, Peggy Mwanguku, Harry Kazembe and Michael Kazembe.

The selected models, one from Blantyre and three from Lilongwe were part of the Malawi Fashion Week 2013. They went through an audition held last week in the capital, where 16 models auditioned.

Speaking in an interview with Nyasa Times, 19-year-old Peggy said it was a great thing that she was selected to represent Malawi.

“I can’t wait to represent my beautiful country,” she said, adding she was looking forward to the event as she expects to gain more experience, exposure and “put Malawi on the map of the fashion industry”.

In a separate interview, Harry, who is also a designer at Mizu Designs in Lilongwe, said it was a dream-come-true for him to be part of such an event.

“It’s something big and this is an opportunity for me to go big in my career as a model,” said the 25-year-old.

Harry, who is inspired by Tyson Beckford and Djimon Hounsou in the modeling world, added: “You just never know who might be there and this might be a chance to get scouted. All in all am looking forward to having fun.”

Apart from the models, two or four designers from Malawi are also expected to participate at the SAFC and according to Thembi, who is the coordinator in the country, selection of the designers will be done this week.

SAFC is a project with a vision of youth development, skills training and showcasing talents by young people who are interested in fashion designing, fashion journalism, modeling, hair styling and becoming make-up artists.

At the hosting of the project it showcases SAFC Fashion Week, the conference, a hair styling competition, Miss SAFC and Miss Teen SAFC.
