The Malawian national, identified as Wise Upambo, aged 21 and the Ethiopian nationals were intercepted during a sweeping exercise by the law enforcers in the district.

They were travelling in a three tonner Mitsubishi Canter registration MC 5278, which was later abandoned by Upambo upon seeing the law enforcers. The vehicle has since been impounded.

In another development, Police in Nkhotakota district arrested 41 people in 2014 for illegal possession of Indian hemp.

The arrests were made between January 1 and December 30 2014, according to the district’s Police spokesperson, William Kaponda.

According to Kaponda, the suspects are aged between 20 and 35, and out of the 41, 32 are men while nine were women whereas seven of the convicts are teenagers.

Among the remarkable incidents in the just gone year was the arrest of a 34 year-old British national, James Daniel Mickey, who was found with 362 black papers containing the illicit drug which he had concealed in an engine boat trailer.

we hear about these illegal immigrant interceptions but never hear from the affected countries’ diplomatic missions. government should be leaving no stone unturned in ensuring this stops. Its quite obvious, these people did not transit via Kenya and Tanzania but most likely came via Indian ocean into Mozambique then across lake Malawi. Malawi Govt Officials need to think critically about this illegal immigration problem frequently committed by Ethiopians. Two issues that come to my mind; 1. Existing laws against illegal immigrants are not punitive enough to deter would be offenders. 2. There must be a cartail doing human trafficking business in Malawi which the Police need to burst.

The figures are so alarming. This is a threat to national security and Malawi must seriously act on this. Stop snorring Malawi. Nobody will feel sorry for you for being stupid with your soveregnity issues. Rise up Malawi!!!
