5 die in road accident, 29 sustain injuries

Five people have died and 29 have been injured in a car accident that took place at Ngala trading center in Nkhotakota on Monday when a minibus collided with a pick-up.

According to Nkhunga Police Public Relations officer Austin Manyungwa, the accident happened around 1500hrs when the driver of the pick-up registration number KK 3868 lost control of the vehicle.

An eye witness Witness Bayiwelo said the pickup driven by Christopher Bayesi was trying to overtake the minibus
registration number NE 1698 driven by Joseph Chimala aged 31 when he saw a woman in front of him.

“He said the driver must have been trying to avoid hitting the woman in front of him and he swerved the vehicle towards his left causing the two vehicles to collide.

“The vehicles collided and the minibus overturned three times,” explained Manyungwa.

The names of the deceased are four year old Happy Mikeasi, Dora Banda also 4 years old, 3 year old Wanangwa Banda who died upon arrival at Ngala health Centre, the pickup driver and James Phiri .

A post mortem results conducted at Matiki Clinic have indicated that the death was due to loss of blood.

The survivors are still receiving treatment at Matiki Clinic and others have been referred to Nkhotakota district hospital.

Following the accident the police is advising drivers to drive carefully and not just think of making a lot of money but to also consider the precious gift of life of the passengers as well as theirs.
