5 Ethiopian nationals nabbed for illegal entry into Malawi

Police in Rumphi have arrested five Ethiopian nationals for illegal entry into the country at Bwengu roadblock in the district.

Rumphi police publicist Victor Khamisi said the five were traveling from Tanzania to Mzuzu by international Taqua Bus.

“When police officers on duty conducted check-ups they found out that the five had no traveling documents to warrant their stay in the country,” said Khamisi.

He added that the five are being kept at Rumphi Prison and that they will appear before a court of law soon to answer charges of illegal entry into the country.

Malawi receives a lot of illegal immigrants because of its porous immigration system. Of the immigrants, most of them are Ethiopians who come to the country in transit to South Africa.

Not long ago, over 15 Ethiopians died on the northern part of Lake Malawi when the boat they were traveling in capsized while trying to illegally enter the country.
