Muluzi consoles DPP, MCP
United Democratic Front (UDF) National Chairman, Dr. Bakili Muluzi in a rare spirit among politicians in Malawi expressed heartfelt condolences to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and its leadership following the death of the Member of Parliament for Chitipa Central, Luwi Musongole.
Muluzi at a rally in Area 50 in Lilongwe on Sunday, said he was “deeply saddened” with the death of the legislator.
"Am a nationalist. Although am always vilified by the DPP and its leadership, I join them in mourning the departed Honorable Member of Parliament," said Muluzi.
The former president also consoled the Roman Catholic Church in Malawi for the loss of its Archbishop Emeritus, James Chiona, who died on Monday last week and laid to rest on Friday.
Muluzi described Chiona as a freedom fighter.
He said the role that late Bishop Chiona played in advocating for change in the country in 1992 through the pastoral letter "Living Our Faith" would be remembered for a long time by many Malawians of good will.
"We can't talk of political change in Malawi, without talking of Archbishop Chiona. His sacrifice liberated this country. We joined in the fight for change due to his courage. May His soul rest in peace,” said Muluzi in somber tone.
The UDF leader also paid tribute to Malawi Congress Party (MCP) legislators, Hamilton Gadama and Respicious Dzanjalimodzi who died in a space of a week.
