Mutharika gets Addis honour

A statement from President Mutharika’s press secretary, Mgeme Kalirani, says a letter from the University’s President said the Senate of the University had given the approval while its Board of Governors had given recognition of the selection of the Malawi leader for the honour.

“The university says it has decided to honour Prof. Peter Mutharika for his great and outstanding contribution in academia in the world which has inspired and continue to inspire other scholars to follow his path,” says the statement.

Mutharika is also Regional Universities Forum (RUFORUM) Champion for Higher Education in Africa, co-convener of the International Commission on Financing Global Education, and Charles Nagel Professor of International and Comparative Constitutional Law Emeritus of the Washington University in the USA.

President Mutharika has since accepted the conferment of the honour of the Degree of Letters Honoris Causa, according to the statement from the press secretary.

There is more to this than meets the eye, same with JB. Someone behind the scenes is paying for this. Universities are PAID to give honorary degrees, they don’t just give them for free. So someone is trying to get a favor out of APM. APM cannot see what is happening, he thinks he is getting this because he is a genius in the mean time he is being played like a guitar. Like most politicians this is the easier thing to do rather than fix the country, its easier to go to parties and be praised by people rather than sit down, get a few clever people together and map a realistic way forward for Malawi.

In Africa today, everything goes backwards. It has become a routine in our Universities to confer an honorary degree to any Jim and Jack. What a human success did Muthalika accomplish to be awarded with a degree of the Doctor of Letters? Africa is indeed,a lost world.Muthalika to be awarded such an honour amidst shameful and criminal undertakings such as theft of public funds in billions, the massively rigging of the last general elections that caltupulted him and his Party into power,he has divided the nation tribalistically to his own advantage,he has driven our nation into unprecedented economic and political cataclysm,he has absolutely,no sense of self respect for instance, most recently,he caused international commotion when he told Malawians under severe shortage of food to EAT RATS and GRASSHOPPERS.The decision therefore by once an internationally respected Institution, the University of Ethiopia is both humbug and lowering the prestige of the once amongst outstanding Institutions in Africa. It reminds me of Idd Amin’s confer of Doctor of Laws by the once leading African University of Makerere in Uganda in the mid 70s,after the rogue had massacred hundreds of thousands of innocent Ugandans and most recently, the Malawi University some call it (University of Kachaso) conferred a PHd degree to John Tembo one of the most cruel and murderous politicians our country has ever had. However, with the Ethiopian University, one has not to be flabbagasted, the State of Ethiopia itself,is full of blood of innocent people especially the minority groups from the North Afterall, there is no sense of decorum when it comes to universal human rights in Ethiopia as in Malawi, tribalism is also highly treasonable. All in all,Addis Ababa University has not represented a dignified ascendancy to the suffering people of Ethiopia and Africa.Who else to be conferred with such honour? Lord Robert Gabriel Mugabe? Major General Yoweri Museveni? Life President Joseph Kabila? GOOD LUCK AFRICA!!!!

We always celebrate in mediocrity…he has done nothing tangible to deserve an award and blow trumpets!! African leaders who most of them are octogenarians are blindfolded when conferred with such honorary degrees….

    1. Nyondo says:

I totally agree with you that we always celebrate in mediocrity. How can a PhD holder like you come on this page and tell us about your education qualification? What’s the relationship here? Oh my …No wonder Malawi has PhD holders more than developed countries, she is the poorest on earth.

    GET YOUR TIMING RIGHT

There are certain untruths about these honourary degrees
. . . was it not this very yesterday, when JB was honoured with doctorate in economic management? yet kumuona JB yo, mhhhh.
. . . if honour was given to people for what they truly are, JB wouldnt get that degree. She was cheated!
. . . and, if honour is given to people because of what they are now, (and not what they were, some 50 yrs ago); this cup could have by-passed APM.
    ………………………………………………………………………….
Yes APM may have been some legal savant some 40 yrs ago, but . . .
. . . isn’t he the one who seems not to know which section or statute will keep Tanzania off lake Malawi?
. . . how about the anti-gay laws which he unceremoniously and unprocedurally suspended?
. . . isn’t this guy the one failing to bring legal sanity in this small country, as people continue to get different sentences on similar cases, committed under similar circumstances e.g. defilement, cashgate?
. . . wasn’t this guy seen celebrating, when the Anti-corruption body was legally paralysed? with lack of independence?
. . . Inu, when his country was hit by a drought; didnt he advise his people to start eating rats (or whatever dzina-lodyera you may call them)? as the best solution?, as per his academic wisdom?
. . . isn’t this guy the Head of State for some poorest country on earth?
    . . . et cetera . . .
Whats honourable about this long story-cut-short? Nothing!
    ……………………………………………………………………….
I just wish these universities could be getting their timing right. Thus, honouring people in their prime not at their lowest. Otherwise, you insult some of us when you eulogise a fire thats almost dead.
. . . you make some of us suspect you have been asked to honour them, kuti aiwaleko mavuto.

I agree with you The Analyst on almost all the fronts in your comment, including on the need for the independence of the ACB. However, my view is that the ACB will never be independent as long as it is under the arms of the government that are 100% dominated by politicians (monkeys) such as the executive and the legislature. Moving it from the executive and put it under the legislature will not and never make it independent. That’s my argument. I will be happy on a day when the ACB will be totally delinked from both the legislature and the executive.

Osakana bwanji? Wole Soyinka and Mugabe have been declining such honarary degrees because they are useless. Educated people should not be wasting time with such degrees, leave it to people like Muluzi and Joyce Banda
