Aford split on association with PP

Barely two weeks after Alliance for Democracy (Aford) national chairperson Enock Chihana declared that Aford will support Peoples Party (PP)  President Joyce Banda in the 2014 tripartite elections, spokesman of the party Dan Msowoya has dismissed Chihana’s  outbursts as baseless.

Aford Publicity Secretary Dan Msowoya said the electoral pact is non-existent.

“The pronouncement is preposterous, unfounded, baseless and uncalled for. It is possible that  Chihana may have been misunderstood… or quoted out of context, in this case  Chihana  alone can tell, and should inform the public here in Malawi and beyond accordingly,” said Msowoya.

Chihana, who is Rumphi Central MP, told a rally President Banda addressed in Rumphi during her tour of North last week, that Banda had delivered to the country and no sensible party should fight to unseat her during the forthcoming elections.

“I am a politician. I am a leader in my party. I declare that we as Aford, we will support Dr Joyce Banda for the presidency and I will win here as MP,” Chihana was quoted as saying.

But a news statement from Aford signed by Msowoya described Chihana’s declaration as “malicious and unfounded”

“Honorable Chihana as the supposed ‘National Chairperson’ in Aford should be assumed to understand the policy and constitutional framework of this esteemed movement,” Msowoya said.

The Aford publicist also claimed that Chihana made a personal confession in a separate interview with MBC’s Winnie Botha that making such a declaration was one of the privileges of being a cabinet Minister.

“This has become his reason for pledging to support the incumbent in the 2014 polls, to express gratitude for the Cabinet position. Nevertheless, we all know in Aford that his appointment to Cabinet has been on a personal to holder basis, and has no direct consequence on the corporate outlook howsoever of Aford,” Msowoya said.

However, Chihana refused to have made the confession on MBC insisting that Aford will support PP in 2014.

“Msowoya always speaks for himself and not for the party. As chairperson it is only me who speaks of policy statements,” Chihana said.
