Malawi Police in Phalombe district have managed to arrest three men who have since confessed to have brutally hacked a 17-year-old boy with albinism last month.

Police have arrested Kingstone Mtiye,40, Mose Phillipo, 25, and 26-year-old Aubrey Maudedi who, on the night of Sunday 29th November, nearly killed Alfred Chikalo with intent to sell his body parts.

It was well wishers who rescued him from the hands of the attackers- who broke into his hut while he was fast asleep- after he screamed for help. Chikalo sustained deep stab wounds in the head,
both arms and on the upper part of left leg.

Phalombe police Public Relations Officer, Augustus Nkhwazi told Nyasa Times the three have since confessed to have committed the crime.

“They confessed before Police officers to have conspired to get bones of an albino for a market in Rumphi district before engaging in the evil act,” explained Nkhwazi. “We arrested them on Wednesday (December 2nd). They will appear before court soon”.

The three have been charged with Conspiracy to Murder contrary to Section 227 and Attempted
Murder contrary to Section 223 of the penal code respectively.

Meanwhile, law-enforcers are still hunting for one more suspect who is currently at large.

Mtiye hails from Saidi village, T/A Jenala, Maudedi is from Chitawo village, T/A Nazombe, and Phillipo comes from Namandwa village, T/A Jenala, all in Phalombe district.

Chikalo was rushed to Phalombe Health Centre by police officers who found him in pool of blood. He was later referred to Holly Family Mission Hospital for treatment, and was discharged last week.

According to the victims’ grandmother, Lydia Petulo 65, he was putting up in a separate house (gowelo) when the incident happened.

Malawi, this year, has recorded more cases of gluesome attacks on people with albinisim.

Body parts of albinos are mistakenly believed to bring wealth in some African countries including Malawi.

  1. As they will be locked they must be in without trial for 35 yrs and release them when this albino dies of natural death that is when he will be 88

People who are victimising fellow human beings ie those albinos must face the face of law.

I wish to thank our prosecutors gor the effort they tirekessly put to make sure justice is not only done but seen to be done.I also wish to concure with Gadabwali that these suspects be charged with attempt to murder contrary to section 223 if penal Code. From the evidence that has come from the sudpects it shows there was conspiracy to murder. This is also contrary to section 228 of the penal Code.

Iam therfore of tthe view that charging these sudpects with attempt to murder and conspiracy to murder is still okay with me.Our Courts are competent enough to deal with this case.May I ask Courts to hasten this case.

Apolice ma…nde anu. Mwasinthanso charge sheet frm unlawful wounding to conspiracy to murder and attempted murder? No, this is outright murder! If u charge such criminals wth such weak case jst because u cannot put up a strong argument in court kenako muluza mlandu, then leave such cases to me, ndikakhale woyimira boma otherwz cases of abduction/killings of people with albinism sadzatha. Ziri ngati spending huge sums of money to halt supply of chamba instead of halting its demand by civic educating the chamba users about the dangers of chamba whch decreases both its usage and the effects that come along wth it. These people have told u they had a market in Rumphi, why dont u go as far as Rumphi to deal wth the users of bones from people wth albinism?

  15. redeemed says:

Even though mob justice is vehemently condemned , so far it has proven to be the most effective operation in mitigating all sorts of criminal elements. I recall some few years ago there was a group of gangsters who were terrorising in of the locationsee here in RSA by forcing young boys to joining them, make them smoke drugs and use them as a tool in breaking into people’s homes. The community managed to mobilise itself against this evil practice and eliminated all the suspected culprits. It was a single night operation but its results are everlasting.
Today this community is enjoying peace and tranquillity it deserves. Remember, no one is immune to crime not even the worse criminal under the sun is prone to crime, hence “tough times call for tough measures.”
