Albino awareness day in Malawi turns highly political: DPP  ‘incredibly insensitive’ subjecting persons  with albinism to shout party slogans

Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials on Monday turned the UN sponsored People with Albinism Awareness Day into a highly politically charged function in Kasungu, putting President Peter Mutharika at centre stage.

DPP officials forced the people with albinism, who looked shocked and insecure following a spate of abductions and killings, shout DPP slogans.

This was in the presence of President Peter Mutharika, his vice Saulos Chilima and a dozen cabinet ministers.

The minister of Gender Jean Kalirani was among the DPP officials who forced the people with albinism to say “DPP woyee, a Peter woyee,” drowning the voices that wanted to highlight the plight of people with albinism.

Senior Chief Kaomba praised Mutharika as the only caring and loving leader Malawi has ever had.

Kaomba has used the same statement to praise former presidents Joyce Banda, Bakili Muluzi and Kamuzu Banda.

He actually championed Cheifs Forum to back Muluzi’s unlimited term bid for presidency.

In his speech, Mutharika avoided the party slogans but seemed to enjoy the praise songs women of the party sang and danced for him.

Instead of singing songs concerning the plight of the people with albinism, the DPP women had all praises for Mutharika.

Mutharika said the Inspector General of Police  Lexten Kachama and his team will soon go to Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania to learn how the countries delt with the abductions and killings of the people with albinism.

He described as misguided reports that the government was just wasting money to send the officials to the east African countries.

“The countries have finally given us clearance so the IG and his team will be leaving the country any time,” he said.

He assured the persons with albinism that the government would construct houses for the people with albinism through the Malata and Cement Subsidy Program.

So building houses for them will solve the albinos’ problems? When are Malawi’s politicians going to put their countrymen and women before their bank accounts & their politics? Shameful, embarrassing that the world should see how our country is governed!

You say these are DPP women? and you are shocked they were singing DPP songs?

Mr President and your crew when do matters of life and death become so to you?

What goes through your conscience when you reduce matters of life and barbaric death to fit in.partisan politics?

Is there anything you value mora than your party?

OH–NO! Actually this walk was a mock of people with Albinism. Please don’t poke your dirty fingers in God’s eyes, these people are God’s children. Let’s be honest here. If these were your children, Mr President and madam Kariati would you subject them to chanting your party slogans? Who is killing these malawians, really? Mr President you are ill-advised, am sorry to say this. People who love the Country and all the people of Malawi would not advise you to do this. It is a solemn time for the people of Malawi and not parties’ rallies celebration using the victims.… Read more »
