Angels are G.Y Imports & Exports Cezobal women champions

Angels basketball team last night emerged champions for the GY Imports and Exports Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) Women League after getting the better of Lady Clippers during the best-of-three series of the women final played at Civo Basketball Court in Lilongwe.

However, the Men Seniors final involving defending champions Cougars and Mimbulu went to the wire after the defending champions staged a dramatic fight back to revenge the 58-40 loss they suffered Thursday evening at the hands of their final opponents during the first tie of the three-game series.

Mimbulu just needed a victory of any margin last night to end the contest but that proved a tall order as Cougars came full force to win the second tie by 59-53 baskets and bring the final contest to the wire.

Sponsors G.Y Imports and Exports, who are dealers in stationery, furniture, ICT equipment and building materials were well set to honour the champions last night but were made to wait until this (Sunday) evening when the two central giants clash in the last of the three-game series at the same venue.

According to Cezoball general secretary Peter Gomani only the top four clubs in the 10-team Men Senior League made it to the final play-offs that saw the fourth-placed Mimbulu beating league leaders Central Knights in a best-of-three contest. Third-placed Cougars defeated second-placed ABC Lions to book a final date against the wild Mimbulu.

The situation was different in the 10-team Women League, where league leaders Lady Clippers proved their superiority by beating fourth-placed Lady Dynamites. Second-placed Angels also won against third-placed ABC Lions to book a final date against Angels.

The Angels were, however, too strong for Clippers during the final match, winning the first two matches of the three-game series to end the contest before the last game.

For winning the Women League, Angels willtonight walk away with a trophy, gold medals and K200,000, courtesy of G.Y Imports and Exports.

Winners of the Men Senior League are expected to receive a trophy, gold medals and K400,000 with League B champions Dream Team expected to cart home K200,000, a trophy and golf medals.

The sponsors will also present K50,000 to each of the Most Valuable Players (MVPs) in the Men Senior and Women leagues.
