Animal welfare charity LSPCA launches new office premises

Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals, (LSPCA), a registered charitable organisation involved in the protection of animal rights and welfare has relocated from Lilongwe’s Area 9 to new premises in Kanengo.

The new office premises, which are located some 400 metres next to Kapani House, opposite buildings for the fertiliser factory project abandoned by the Taiwanese in Kanengo were officially launched on Sunday at a ceremony, which attracted the presence of US Ambassador Virginia Parma and other LSPCA friends and partners.

Presiding over the launch was Director of Prosecutions in the Malawi Police Service (MPS) Deputy Commissioner of Police Happy Mkandawire, who expressed gratitude to LSPCA for complementing the service’s efforts in enforcing the animal protection legislation.

“Before the coming of LSPCA, we had been facing a lot of problems in enforcing the animal protection law.

“It was difficult for us to make people understand that animals too had their rights as enshrined in the Animal Protection Act but with the coming of the organisation, our job has been made easy because LSPCA is able to reach out to the public with awareness programmes on animal protection,” said Mkandawire.

LSPCA board chair Eveline Sibindi Van Dam expressed optimism that more members from the community will be able to reach the organisation in the new premises.

“We were operating from a small office in Area 9 but the new premises offer a good environment for our clients, partners, staff as well as the education programmes that we provide to the public,” said Sibindi.

The board chair hailed the Malawi Police Service, Lilongwe City Council, Veterinary Department and international partners for working hand in hand with the organisation in safeguarding animal welfare.

Apart from running a veterinary clinic for pets and farm animals, LSPCA has been offering the following services for free; education of school children on animal welfare and the importance of correct animal care, veterinary treatment to village farm animals, empowering communities with knowledge on improving welfare of donkeys, organising large scale rabies’ campaigns in conjunction with the government and sterilising village dogs.

LSPCA also has healthy dogs and cats of different breeds for adoption at a fee.
