APM’s Community College initiative receives a boost
One of the initiatives President Professor Peter Mutharika had been promising the Malawi nation during his campaign trail was that he would establish community colleges with the view to imparting entrepreneurial skills in the youths to make them self dependent.
What might have appeared as mere rhetoric and campaign gimmick has now started to be recognized as feasible implementable initiative by some well meaning development partners across the boarders.
The development follows a meeting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr George Chaponda had on Thursday in New York with members of a New York based organisation called ‘Building Tomorrow’ that should give hope to the youth of Malawi the prospects that they will soon start to benefit from the initiative.
Briefing the Malawi media on what transpired during the meeting, Dr Chaponda said; “We had a meeting with the group that has been inspired by the vision of Professor Peter Mutharika of establishing community colleges in Malawi which will lead to skills development among the youth.
“The group has offered that they are willing to assist government and that we have agreed on a time frame -the time frame implies that by October we will come up with an MOU (Memorandum of understanding) with them which will lead to their director coming to Malawi around February 2015 and thereafter the commencement of the construction of the colleges.”
Chaponda further said they had agreed with the group that to ensure ownership of the infrastructure, it was important that the communities should be involved especially in mobilizing resources such as sand as they have been doing in the past in LDF projects.

Jealous down! I am writing from outside the country. But once Chaponda is around here, the boy works. I do not know what he does in his ministry or else where. Here he is impressive.

Now, this is leadership from APM and DPP. Community Colleges may be a big help in solving the economic anemia we see in this country. The US and Canada are but two examples where these institutions have contributed greatly to the economy. This model to the trades is long overdue in our country. Kamuzu’s MYP bases would have done the job, but for their politicization. That was a big mistake, by the dictator!
