Aspiring MP for Malawi ruling PP gets death threats: ‘You will follow Chasowa’

Lawrence Sitolo an aspiring to run for parliamentary seat on ruling People’s Party (PP) ticket in Nsanje Lalanje Constituency has been warned through an anonymous text message not to contest in 2014.

Sitolo reported the death threats to Soche Police in Blantyre and Southern Region Police Headquarters spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa confirmed that investigations have been launched.

Reads the text message: “Sitolo be warned that if you insist to contest in 2014 you will die sooner than later. We know where you live and where you work. We are watching all your moves. Umutsatira mwana mnzako Chasowa. Think twice or risk your life to politics, this is not your time, take or leave it. We are the killers.”

Chasowa was University of Malawi’s Polytechnic student who was murdered during the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime.  He was involved in political activism.

Sitolo, who is expected to challenge deputy minister Sam Ganda in the PP primary elections, said unknown people recently pulled over their unregistered vehicle at his house in Chitawira Township but left immediately when confronted by his guards.

Ganda has since said he  does not know his challenger.

But PP deputy administrative officer Joseph Chikwemba he has discussed the matter with Sitolo as a friend and advised him to report to police and described the incident as  “unfortunate.”
