Atupele invades Chakwera’s backyard: ‘Backwards never, forward with winning’

Atupele Muluzi, United Democratic Front (UDF )May 20 presidential candidate intensified his campaign in Lilongwe rural in the area of Traditional Authority Khongoni and Kabudula where apparently is the home of Malawi Congress Party  (MCP) president, Lazarous Chakwera exuding confidence that Malawians will vote for economic change that he is touting  when they go to the ballot box.

The programme indicated that the UDF leader was supposed to address a rally at Kabudula trading centre and Malembo primary school but was forced to stop at several places by public demand including Nsaru trading centre.

If the excitement, jubilation and huge patronage noted at all the venues is anything to go by the MCP leader should rethink his strategy to protect his back yard.

” I am taking this election very seriously. This fight is for economic freedom. When we start the actual campaign doubting Thomases will be shocked,” he said.

“Backwards never, forward with winning elections, down with the same old politics,” he said

He said told jubilant supporters that his choice of Dr Godfrey Chapola as his running mate is an indication that the UDF party is ready to govern and deliver.

Apparently the appointment of Chapola, central region man whose political life is not associated with any bad politics as running mate for Atupele has changed the political terrain in the region.

Coming from the agricultural back ground which is the main occupation of the central region, Chapola is a persona in agriculture and better placed to ride on agriculture card.

What seemed to have clicked with the majority of those that attended the rallies was UDF’s position on Fertilizer Subsidy Program.

He told the gatherings that the next UDF administration will abolish the coupon system and instead introduce universal subsidy program where by the price of Fertilizer will be reduced for everybody to be able to buy.

He said the current FISP programme is prone to abuse and corruption.

The UDF leader is scheduled to present certificates to all parliamentary and local government candidates from the central region at a function which will take place at Capital City Motel on Wednesday.
