Bandawe laid to rest: Former Malawi High Commissioner  to Zambia

Thousands of people Tuesday gathered at Chileka village in the area of Traditional Authority Chiwere to pay their last respects and lay to rest former Malawi High Commissioner to Zambia, David Bandawe.

Bandawe succumbed to cancer which was discovered last July and he passed away on Sunday April 16, 2017 at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

In his eulogy, Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Duncan Chione said the ministry has been saddened by the death of  Bandawe.

He said after ending his tour of duty in Zambia, late Bandawe was playing an advisory role to newly appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioners.

“Late Bandawe served the country as High Commissioner well. The ministry learnt a lot of things from him. He was hard working and committed to duty,” Chione explained.

Inkosi Chiwere said late Bandawe has done a lot for the country and his passing is a great loss to the nation.

He described him as a humble person who associated well with all age groups.

Dowa East parliamentarian Richard  Chimwendo Banda added that late Bandawe was a pillar of development to the district and was resourceful.

Chimwendo Banda said he served his country as a High Commissioner with dedication and the nation will miss him greatly.

The church service was presided over by General Secretary for Nkhoma Synod of the Church of Central African Presbyterian (CCAP), Rev. Katani Mwale.

Bandawe is survived by a wife and five children.

He was born on May 4, 1957 and did his primary education at Dowa 1 Primary School. He went to Kongwe Secondary School (now Robert Blake) and did his tertiary education at Chancellor College from 1976 to 1980 where he a obtained a Bachelors degree in Public Administration.

Bandawe later obtained Master of Arts in International Relations from Ohio University in USA.

He worked for Reserve Bank of Malawi, Malawi Parliament, Malawi Young Pioneers, National Statistical Office, Malawi Electoral Commission, Lilongwe City Assembly, Salima Town Assembly and Malawi High Commission in Zambia.

He was appointed Malawi High Commissioner to Zambia in 2009 and ended his tour of duty in October 2016.

The people that attended the burial ceremony included Chief Secretary to the Government Lloyd Muhara, Attorney General Kalekeni Kaphale, Malawi  High Commissioner designate to India and former Chief Secretary, George Mkondiwa, Deputy Malawi High Commissioner to Zambia, Mrs Ellen Solomoni, Malawi Electoral Commissioners, Mary Nkosi and Angellia Kunje, top government officials, retired principal secretaries, former diplomats, traditional and religious leaders.
