Beach soccer teams to participate in Malawi Pres. Cup, FAM CUP

Beach Soccer teams in the country have reason to smile following Football Association of Malawi’s (FAM) announcement that this year beach soccer will have its share in the Presidential and FAM Cup tournaments.

FAM President, Walter Nyamilandu made the announcement Sunday during the  Stadal Building Contractors Beach Soccer Tournament finals between Zitherepano and Mangochi based Navy team at Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi.

During the finals, Zitherepano were crowned champions after beating Mangochi based Navy 1-0 courtesy of Pilirani Amadu.

For scooping the first slot, Zitherepano received K35, 000 while the losing finalists went home with K30, 000.

Nyamilandu said time has come for the country to form a beach soccer national team in order to compete with high class teams across the globe.

The moment of happiness came when Nyamilandu announced to the people who thronged Nkopola Lodge that from this year Beach soccer will have its share in the Presidential and FAM Cups.

He said teams in Beach soccer would compete for the FAM Cup as well as the prestigious Presidential Cup.

Commenting on Nyamilandu’s announcement, Beach Soccer general secretary, Davis Sado saluted FAM for their gesture and vowed to develop the game to a step further.

Sado said the coming in of the two cups would promote stiff competition among the teams from the four districts of Karonga, Nkhatabay (Chintheche), Salima and Mangochi. Each of the districts runs its own league.

Sado further said the idea of forming a Beach soccer national team was a welcome development as they feel time has come for the country to have its own team.

“We have well talented players from our leagues and let me salute FAM for introducing the topic because it has been our dream to form a Beach Soccer national team,” said Sado.

Another notable thing after the tournament was the revelation by Stanford Mpoola, who sponsored the two-day tournament that from this season, he will sponsor the Beach Soccer League in Mangochi district to the tune of K1 million  (about $2 564).

“I have been impressed with the two-day tournament. The organisation and the passion from teams to win have persuaded me to sponsor the league. Now I have decided to sponsor the Southern league to the tune of K1 million. This is just the beginning. If it happens that the league is successful, I will increase the amount,” he said.

Mpoola emphasized that it was his dream to see the district developing as far as the game of Beach Soccer is concerned.
