Ben Phiri says: ‘ PP thugs assulted me’

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) director of operations Ben Phiri said he recognised the people who assaulted him on Monday night and that they were members of ruling People’s Party.

Phiri who has been discharged at the Blantyre Adventist Hospital (BAH) where he was hospitalised, said he assaulted by a group of 15 men led by a man he identified as PP director of youth Lemani Chapitapansi.

“I saw the men led by Chapitapansi who had spoken to PP secretary general Paul Maulidi at Mount Soche Hotel that they were on an operation and then they pounced on me,” said Phiri, who is also personal assistant (PA) to DPP presidential candidate Peter Mutharika.

“It’s a sad development. They (PP) are trying to retain power through intimidation,” said Phiri in an interview with a local radi.

But he said the attack will not daunt her political work.

“I will be back on my seat doing what I know best. We in DPP will never get intimidated,” said Phiri.

PP deputy publicity secretary Ken Msonda said it was wrong for DPP to drag a peaceful and democratic party in someone’s private life.

No arrests have been made.
