BJ Mpinganjira orders northerners out of Mulanje

Former Minister of Irrigation and Water Development Brown Mpinganjira has directed Mulanje District Council that all civil servants from the north but working in Mulanje to be re-deployed to other districts.

Nyasa Times has established that following the order the District Council has already transferred the district’s Director of Administration a Mr Munthali to Mchinji District and the Director of Finance a Mr Mhango to Kasungu.

However, in an interview Mulanje DC Jack Nguluwe confirmed the transfer of the two but could not be drawn to comment on the reasons and whether it was following instructions from Mpinganjira.

Sources from both the Ministry of Local Government and Mulanje District Council disclosed that Mpinganjira specifically raised concerns that there were a lot of Tumbukas  (from the north) working in the districts and need to be moved with immediate effect.

“He actually told one of the meetings with management at the district council that he was not happy that there are many Tumbukas working at the council,” said one source in the DC’s office.

Another top official at the Ministry of Local Government said Munthali and Mhango are not the only ones to be re-deployed and replaced by officers from either Mulanje or other districts.

“Even the DC himself might face re-deployment,” said the ministry official.

This is not the first time that Mpinganjira is caught interfering with the affairs of the district council.

Recently, he asked the DC’s office to always inform him whenever anyone is initiating a development project in Mulanje Central constituency where he is an aspiring parliamentary candidate for the ruling Peoples’ Party.

Critics argue that what Mpinganjira is doing has been the hallmark of Malawian politics where those that serve in government at the mercy of the President want to overstretch their hand and push around civil servants to achieve their selfish political motives.

Mpinganjira currently has no position in the PP after he failed to get any executive position during the party’s national convention.
