Blacks brace for Kuimba 9 launch

Chileka-based reggae band say they are ready to give patrons a performance they will live to remember when they launch their ‘Kuimba 9’ at Robins Park in Blantyre  Friday.

Speaking to Nyasa Times during their practice session at Likhubula Hall in Chileka on Thursday, Black Missionaries’ frontman Anjiru Fumulani said the band’s adrenaline levels are high in anticipation of the launch.

“We have been practicing everyday for the whole week and we are geared to give a performance on a lifetime,” said Anjiru. “We are happy with what we have achieved and we are ready.”

According to Anjiru, patrons to the launch in Blantyre and Lilongwe Golf Club on Sunday will receive a free CD upon entry into the venue.

The band leader noted that the launch will bring to an end a lingering anticipation that has been hovering around the ‘Kuimba 9’ launch since the beginning of the year.

He explained that the delay was due to several factors.

“First, we had to create space for our brother Anthony Makondetsa’s launch and then we had to travel to South Africa for a tour. So we needed ample time to practice and prepare for the launch, hence the delay.

“But now all is set and as a band we are thrilled that this journey is coming to a climax and people can now have this music in their homes.”

‘Kuimba 9’ is the Black Missionaries’ seventh album after their founder and inspiration Evison Matafale’s ‘Kuimba 1’ and ‘Kuimba 2’.

The album has 13 tracks with four tracks enjoying radio and club airplay since January.

However, Anjiru declared that the rest of the nine songs in the album are a surprise package.

“People will be surprised. We know that people have listened to the four promotional songs. But what we can say is that if they have been impressed by these four songs, then they will be thrilled with the whole album because the arrangement and the composition is top notch,” he said.

He added: “Every time we work on a new album, we realize that we have to move forward, and not backwards. We strive to make each album better.”
