Blantyre residents celebrates Christmas with dry taps

Water crisis that has engulfed most parts in Malawi’s commercial capital, Blantyre has adversely affected most households as instead of celebrating Christmas are seen running up and down searching for water as there is no water supply in their areas.

Water users have now gone for at least four days without water, a development that has irked and dragged residents in awkward situation.

According to Blantyre Water Board (BWB), a pipe that supplies water to areas in Soche Zone was washed away by rains at Nansolo river in Ndirande.

Areas that have been affected include Manyowe, Sunnyside, CI, New and Old Naperi, Kamba, Zingwangwa, Chilobwe, Stella Maris, Green Corner, Mpempa, Chilobwe Chatha, Ginnery Corner, Baluti, Nancholi and Mandala.

Heavy rains also washed away several houses, properties and three people along the river in the highly densely population of the commercial capital.

A 64 year-old man and two children, aged 15 and 3, were reportedly washed away.

Meanwhile, BWB spokesperson Priscilla Mateyu said their engineers are currently working on the problem to make sure that supply is restored at the earliest possible time.

“Customers in Soche Zone are requested to close their water taps during this period and use water sparingly,” said Mateyu.

She said the Board regrets the inconvenience the problem has caused in the said Zone.

The development comes barely a few days after President Peter Mutharika assured Malawians that government is doing everything possible to solve water shortage problems.

Mutharika said his administration is determined to make BWB to be able to supply sufficient water to all residents.

He also observed that BWB’s infrastructure is aged and has out-lived its designed capacity, which initially meant for a population of 500,000 residents up to the year 1999 and today BWB has over 1 million customers.

“Further due to inadequate rains in the year 2012/13, the Mudi Dam which produces 10 percent of the Board’s water production dried up by October 2014.

“We embarked on a total rehabilitation of the BWB production facilities and replacement of pumps at Walker Ferry and Chileka Pumping Sites and by March 2015, the BWB will be able to meet all the demand of 96,000 cubic meters per day up from the current 74,000 cubic meters production capacity,” said Mutharika in national address last weekend.

He also said in additional government will construct a water supply system from Mulanje Mountain at the cost of about $12 million to provide extra 8,000 cubic meters of water per day to Blantyre and surrounding areas.

  12. Wetha says:

Top Management at BWB was busy in sexual affairs with other people’s wives the likes of Ruth,Aggie, Walu, Kate, Christina, while the problem was looming some 5 years ago. Gross under performance by our outgoing Chief Executive Andrew Thawe should be taken as a criminal act.

  21. BWB man says:

Country men, what the so called Boses or engineers at BWB know is kuchiTa female workers or mahule a Ntauni in their offices. We are compiling a list and just watch this place. We should not pay for their stupidity, offices are not for sex.

  22. bratusha says:

That’s why I am personally of the view that in Malawi there is a mismatch between the entitlements and productivity of the so called CEOs of organizations. You will note that these guys are entitled to a massive office, posh cars, decent accommodation etc. However, when you evaluate what they actually do to improve service provision, it leaves a lot to be desired. CEOs are supposed to be creative and innovative. Shire river is just a stone throw from Blantyre city with a generally flat terrain in between. Why should Blantyre city have perennial water problems yet we have these so called CEOs who supposed to be visionary? My foot!

  23. mbanga says:

Guys mungoyankhula. There is one solution. Don’t pay any bill. Fuck them. If they cut water supply fuck them too.

  27. chitopa says:

I live in the Limbe area. Five literal days. Can you imagine being without water, a life essential, and having to accept that its okay, and normal???? What is not normal, is our self value/esteem.We are accepting to be lower than animals, because they even find water their normal way. Sadly, nobody amongst all who have registered to remedy the anomaly relate with it in real terms and with honest. They should if they did, show initiatives to mitigate the situation by providing intermittent/emergency supply means. Its a bang of an empty drum to proclaim the same and frayed trite of ” we are aware and solving…,” without outlining to us the approach, plans underway, what specifically you have done so far, what are the challenges, the resources you have, and those lacking? Water board mouth piece; hush, hush, with empty rhetoric. 1. Why should pipelines of water wash away? You did improper designs, did not anchor them, or you are unfit for the work. We laid pipes at the river mouths of rampant Mulanje mountain rivers. You can’t get anything harsher in the country. They are intact in place. Can you have us do the work? Countrymen, lake Malawi has the water. Troublesome is the transportation infrastructure, which comes down to failure of the Water board team. Why in decades we can’t retain all the wash away water of rain season into dams and catchments, than let it over flood to Zambezi and finally to the ocean. Come next year same time, I bet the same rhetoric of, “awareness and fixing it,” will be replicated by the highest authority of the land, and his subordinates. Abhorrent and preposterous.

  28. Kadakwiza says:

Why Malawians are crying like chickens, kwe, kwe, kwe, kwe. What do you want, water? Do you think the DPP government will listen to you? I don’t think so. And I can see Malawians there is nothing you can do. Just cry, cry may be harder as you are better on that department of CRYING.

  29. Stout says:

My sympathies to those affected by the flooding. Whilst a wash away is not the fault of BWB they should at least manage the water distribution beter by closing valves to the areas that never seem to have a problem and the resedents throw the water on the grass.

Peter Mathanyula and all DPP diehards should take time to hear what most Blantyre residents are saying about the current government . Life has never been this hard in BT . Maxon Mbendera and Saulosi Chilima , may your souls burn in hell for what you did in May, 2014 .

  35. Mzika ya BT town says:

It has now become a hard norm. Imagine in Mpingwe two months without water.

Water bowser only fueling scrambling and pushing one on the water queu too bad for our city.

We are relying on harvested rain water. The water tend to be sliperly for bathing wise.

Sometimes when you think of dwelling in Blantyre it buffles and wishing the rain showers non stop to enable residents harvest more water.

Think of flushing toilets in Limbe town and offices. Too bad to experience this modern day slavery.

That is what we are paying today for entrusting some incompetent hands at BWB resulting in shoddy work and characterised by I don’t care mentality by some staff. In reality, a major referal hospital Queens with dry taps paralysing the operations of the hospital such as surgeries.

The behavior of BWB is spilling over to innocent people. Beautiful women in town seen busy carrying buckets of water on top of their heads. I feel sorry for our beloved country.
