Blantyre Sports Club defends Captain’s Putter olf trophy
Blantyre Sports Club on Sunday defended the Captain’s Putter golf trophy during a highly contested competition held at the Country Club Limbe.
Captain’s Putter is an inter club competition between Country Club Limited and Blantyre Sports Club introduced more than two decades ago and is played every January on rational basis. The competition pits golfers from the two clubs.
Speaking in an interview Blantyre Sports Club golf captain Sam Mwale said the BSC were the trophy holders and went to Country Club Limbe as defending champions. According to Mwale 60 golfers participated forming 30 teams, 15 from each club. He said the game ended square at 7.5 points apiece.
“This meant that the trophy went back to BSC. Next year the tournament will be played at Blantyre Sports Club. As defending champions, it was up to Country Club Limbe to grab the trophy from us but as it stands they failed. This is a game of pride and therefore we can confidently say BSC remains the cream of golf between the two clubs,” Mwale said tongue in cheek.
To win the trophy Limbe was supposed to win more games than Blantyre. However on the day, BSC forced a draw in order to retain the trophy. According to Mwale BSC’s strategy was to tame CCL and force a draw so that the trophy should remain at their club.
“We knew Country Club Limbe will come guns blazing and our strategy was to force a draw knowing we were playing in their territory. We will finish them off next year when they come to Blantyre to underline our supremacy as the best golfers in Blantyre,” he said.
The tournament was played on a four-better-ball match-play format, stroking off the lowest handicap on hole by hole basis.
