Blantyre vendors dismiss Union Chairperson
Vendors in Blantyre have relieved their Union chairperson Thomson Banda for alleged gross incompetence and insubordination, it has been reported.
He has since been replaced by Lyson Changaya.
Banda, who has for many years successfully fought for the wellbeing of vendors in the commercial city of Blantyre and district of Limbe, is said to have appeared before a disciplinary committee last week.
Nyasa Times understands that Banda was recently given employment at the Blantyre City Council (BCC) as a Traffic Management Warder, a development deemed as conflict with the Union’s policy, and making him incompetent.
Since he could not voluntarily step down, Banda was taken to be insubordinate.
Banda has been on the position for over two years during which there have been less infighting among vendors and between the vendors and the council which some think could be the reason the council awarded him with employment to the chagrin of colleagues.
There has been no immediate comment from the sacked Banda and people close to him say that he might not wrestle for the position for he would not want to be seen as if he is betraying his colleagues.
