Bossaros in town, Iceberg and Cyclone revive careers

Remember the hit song “Mbina” by WuN? Remember the legendary group The Basement which had hits like “Banyamulenge”, “Vimbuza” and “Dolla yanga ili kuti”? Well, Iceberg of WuN and Cyclone of The Basement are back and have teamed up to form Bossaro Music Group.

Iceberg

According to Iceberg, “Bossaro” is a slang word for “Boss”.

“It’s kinda like a Malawian version that a friend of ours came up with when describing a big boss in town like “eh mkulu uyo ndi Bossaro!” It’s grown into something more amongst me and my group of friends. It has become a lifestyle, a mentality. Do everything to the maximum and be the best at what you do. Be more than a boss, be a Bossaro!,” Iceberg said in an interview on Wednesday.

“Bossaro Music Group was started by Iceberg and Cyclone sometime in mid 2016 when we started discussing doing music together. We hang out a lot and use the term Bossaro when referring to each other. So we made a track together called “Ma Bossaro” around September last year which got a good reception.

“Due to the chemistry in the booth on that track and the reception it got we decided to revive both our careers in rap by creating a label and calling it “Bossaro Music Group”. It’s just the two of us for now but in the future we hope to expand,” he added.

In an interesting development, the group seems to have joined the “Operation Kill the Wackiness” campaign which Third Eye started a few weeks ago.

“We feel like too much emphasis has been placed on dope beats, ad libs, gimmicks and social media “beef” and not enough on rappers who can actually rap. We don’t wanna dilute ourselves. We wanna make it by being rappers that actually are good at rapping and kill the wackiness as D1 and Third Eye would say. That’s actually the main inspiration behind the song “No Fear”. We don’t believe that in order to make a good song you gotta dumb it down,” the Bossaro artist explained.

Iceberg has been rapping since he was a little kid. He first got recognition as a member of the Malawi hip hop group “WuN” alongside N.I.C and Fadson with a song “Mbina”.

WuN also went on to get its track “Look Into My Eyes” played on BBC and came second in a worldwide music contest hosted by BBC called the Next Big Thing.

“That was like 2005 to 2007. Since then I haven’t really been on the radar until I returned last year with Cyclone on “Ma Bossaro” and on my single “Number 1” featuring Bucci. So “No Fear” is like the third single out under the new Bossaro Music Group. We also got a massive track with Cyclone, Malinga Mafia and Sonye called “Bow Down (Anne Kansiime)” which we will release with a video sometime in March,” Iceberg revealed.
