_1710847_police150Malawi President Bingu Mutharika on Friday sent a heavily armed police contingent to crash a peaceful march by the Livingstonia Synod in the northern city of Mzuzu.

The march was aimed at voicing out social injustices by the present adminstration like the implemention of genocidal policies against the people of the north.

“We, the ministers and elders of the Livingstonia Synod had our conference and planned to march to deliver our petition to government of some policies which are doing a lot of injustice to the region.

“But a heavily armed police with live bullets sorrounded the Synod offices in Mzuzu where the march was supposed to start. We were blocked by these men (police) who seemed to mean business.

“The minsiters stayed calm and we sung our hymns and then read the petition at a press briefing,” said the deputy secretary general of the Synod, Revered Maurice Munthali.

Mutharika’s police blocked over 300 ministers and elders from the entire region despite receiving a prior notification of the march within the stipulated timeframe requirement of 48 hours.
