Head of TNM Commercial Services, Charles Kamoto told Capital Radio that the initial thrust of the new product will be on offering video calls, mobile television and mobile broadband while other multi-media services will be on offer at later stages.

“Basically this product is sitting on our new technology called 3 and half G technology, which will enable customers to have faster access to the internet than before. We are talking about speed of 3.6 megabits per second,” said Kamoto.

“It will also enable our customers to watch live TV on the mobile phone, they can also watch live TV on their computer using our dongles,” he said.

Kamoto said the new product will enable TNM customers to make two-way video calls.

“In a video call you can make a call to your colleague whether they are in Lilongwe or Blantyre provided they are also on 3G enabled phone and they are also they are active on 3G,” explained Kamoto.

“They can transmit their pictures while talking to you and you also transmit your picture to the person you are talking to. So both of you, as you are talking to each other could be seeing each other,” he said.

He also said the service will enable high-speed browsing that will allow TNM customers to download bigger files on to the internet.

Kamoto said the service is currently available on post-paid subscribed customers but said soon pre-paid customers will have access to the services.

He said customers will access f to a group of channels like BBC, Al Jazeera, Bloomberg and France 24 for free on their mobile handsets.

“But TNM will now be developing partnerships to access  even paying  channels where we will bundle those services together with our data bundles and offer customers even paying channels but that’s a next step for us,” said Kamoto.

“We [TNM] are committed to provide service to the Malawi community and not just service but top-notch service, our network, our equipment; we just want to show that we are not behind. 3G and 3 and half G is a recent technology and it has just been launched. We want to show the nation that we don’t want to be behind other developed nations.

“Most less developed nations do not have this service on board for their customers but in Malawi we are very aggressive, we believe that our customers need quality, they need top-notch services and that why we had to bring this 3and half G technology,” said Kamoto.
