Callista not Mutharika’s advisor: She is Coordinator of Safemotherhood – Govt

Malawi Government has clarified that the country’s former First Lady, Callista Mutharika is not among the advisors of President Arthur Peter Mutharika but just a National Coordinator for the Safe Motherhood and Population Services.

Callista, a wife to Peter’s brother late Bingu, also held the same position during his husband’s tenure while the position was directly in the Office of the President and Cabinet.

Her new role means that she will be in the Ministry of Health where the initiative has been shifted to and she will replace Chief Kwataine of Ntcheu who was appointed by former President Joyce Banda.

Minister of Information, Tourism and Civic Education Kondwani Nankhumwa, made the clarification is a statement meant to expel what the government called misinformation that the savings that are being made through a lean cabinet of 20 members are being depleted by a ‘big’ number of advisors.

“It is also worth clarifying that the former First Lady is not among the advisors of the President as it is being claimed,” said Minister Kondwani Nankhumwa who is also government spokesperson.

The statement goes ahead to give details of the ministerial perks and those of advisors.

However, while in her previous role Callista was said to be drawing a salary and benefits equivalent to a minister, the statement has not divulged what she is getting now.
