Carlsberg Cup Round of 16 roll into action 

The battle to grab K12 million grand prize in the prestigious Carlsberg Cup reaches a critical stage starting from Thursday 4th August 2016 following the confirmation of fixtures for the round of 16 phase by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM).

Last years runners up Nyasa Big Bullets face resillient Azam Tigers in the opening fixture of the round of16 matches and is scheduled to take place at the artificial turf of the country’s soccer Mecca Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Meanwhile, the out spoken Tigers Technical Director Robin Alufandika says they are ready for the showdown and has pleaded with the officiating team to handle the match professionally.

On Saturday 6th August, it will be Moyale Barracks welcoming Mafco FC in an all soldiers affair at the Mzuzu Stadium.

Current league leaders Silver Strikers will take on Northern Region lower league side Zolozolo FC in a tricky fixture considering the fact that the youthful side booted out super league side Max Bullets.

Still on Saturday, Warm Heart Bullets will battle it out with Eastern Region side Mangochi Police at Nankhaka Stadium while Wizards FC will lock horns with Mzuzu United at the MDC Stadium.

Action in the Carlsberg Cup round of 16 will continue on Sunday with two games as Civo Youth face Red Lions at Civo while Zomba United face Prison United at Zomba Community Centre.

The final round of 16 fixture involving defending champions Mighty Be Forward Wanderers and Kamuzu Barracks will be played on Wednesday 10th August at the Kamuzu Stadium.

This promises to be a cracking encounter as the defending champions face a team which is looking forward to repeat a history they made in 2012 by winning the cup.

Meanwhile, 134 goals have been scored from 47 games played so far.

Dan Dzimkambani of Ginnery Corner (now out of the competition) and Lawson Chilewe of Prison United are the current leading joint scorers and they have scored five goals each.

The golden boot winner in this years competition will receive K200,000.00.

At this far, only seven teams  from lower regional leagues are remaining in the competition including Zomba United who in 2014 reached the finals.
