Carlsberg Malawi dresses semi-finalists: FAM rejects plea to change venues

The battle fields are known. The stakes are high, all semi-finalists, having accorded a two-week break, are promising fireworks, but two teams will certainly progress to the finals of prestigious Carlsberg Cup by close of business this Sunday.

The sponsors will also add colour to the semi-final matches by providing uniforms to four teams, Big Bullets, Wanderers, Moyale and Silver Strikers.

According to the organizers, the uniforms, to be presented Wednesday, are of high quality and every player will have his name labelled on the back.

Likewise, football fans, mainly those whose teams reached this stage, are looking forward to getting ‘drunk’ over nothing but victories.

Crucial stages like this one are always characterized by mind games, accusations, counter-accusations and juju claims, but two best teams will book tickets for the finals.

First semi-final match–involving cup holders Big Bullets and Silver Strikers will be played at Kamuzu stadium while Mighty Be Forward Wanderers will battle it out with Moyale Barracks on Sunday at Civo stadium.

Teams that bowed out in the quarterfinals will receive K300,000 each, semifinalists will get K500,000, runners up K4 million while K9 million is for the champions. There is also K100,000 cash prize to be given to the Discovery of the Tournament.

However, some football fans and Moyale Barracks accused Football Association Malawi (Fam) of staging their game against Wanders in Lilongwe instead of Mzuzu.

The Mzuzu based military side threatened not fulfill their fixture and requested the organizers to reschedule the game to Mzuzu stadium.
However, FAM Competition Manager Gomezgani Zakazaka told Nyasa Times that these match venues were duly suggested by the sponsor, Carlsberg Malawi in respect to Rules and Regulations governing the tournament.

Article 8.1 of the Carlsberg Cup Rules and Regulations states that time and venue of the matches shall be determined by the organizing committee as per the draw that will be conducted.

“These match venues were suggested the sponsors, Carlsberg Malawi. I am even surprised that some people are talking a lot on this issue forgetting that last year we had Bullets and Wanderers playing in Lilongwe.

“It is the discretion of the organising committee to choose venues but when it reaches this level they take into consideration sponsor’s interests,” said Zakazaka.

The Competition Manager also expressed satisfaction with the level of competition as teams gave all their best to progress to the next round.

“The performance on the ground has been so impressive and the behavior of fans and teams has been very good and we expect the same in coming fixtures,” said Zakazaka.
