A Malawian national Andrew Green [Malunga] has been selected for trials in LA Galaxy football club of USA from over 200 participants in the 2010 Galaxy Open Tryouts at The Home Depot Center.

Green, a midfielder, a son of former Malawi national team and MTL Wanderers FC midfield star, Leonard Malunga was selected together with defender Abdul Razzaq Juma.

“Over two days, the Open Tryout participants were evaluated in a series of 7v7 games in Round 1 before concluding with an 11 v 11 game against the Galaxy U-18’s in Round 2,” said the LA Galaxy on its website.

“By being selected, Green and Juma have been invited for a trial in May with the Galaxy’s U-20 team, which competes in USL Super-20 League,” the Club said.

Malawi’s US based rapper, Chawezi Munthali better known by his showbiz name “Chazz” told Nyasa Times that Malunga is helping his son in building the football career.

”Leonard is a great father to all his kids. I have seen what he does, he works hard to provide them what they need and supports their dreams,” Chazz told Nyasa Times. “Am proud of him and his kid.”

LA Galaxy said after several days of “evaluation and deliberation”, the Galaxy Open Tryouts Assessors selected Green and Juma as the two top players from the Open Tryouts based on their technical, tactical and athletic abilities.

“On day one, we looked for players that caught our eye, in particular those demonstrating elite physical condition with the speed, power and agility to compete for a roster spot, and at the players’ tactical skill, positioning and touch on the ball,” said Ralph Perez, an assistant coach with the 1990 U.S World Cup team. “We felt both Andrew and Abdul should have another chance to try and compete for a spot.”

Currently, the Malawian is training with the Hollywood United Hitmen of the Premier Development League (PDL), according to LA Galaxy.

The Open Tryouts attracted more than 200 players including wait listed players. There two players from United Kingdom, France and Mexico and United Kingdom as well as Brazil, Japan and Taiwan.

South African based Malawi national team striker Peter Wadabwa says he is keen to help his former team ESCOM United should they feel so.
Wadabwa, who currently plies his trade with South Africa’s Thanda Royal Zulu, said he is talking to his team’s director to allow him be loaned to ESCOM during his four-month holiday in the country.

The league in South Africa ended earlier to give the South Africa national team players ample time to prepare for the World Cup which they are hosting in less than 100 days from now.

And Wadabwa, whose First Division side already finished the league games, is expected to come back home for an extended holiday. The South African league will also delay for a smooth World Cup soccer show.

The player noted that four months without kicking a ball is long enough for a player and he would love to rejoin ESCOM and be featured in the forthcoming cup games as part of keeping himself fit.

“I am still discussing the matter with my director and I am hopeful he will allow me to join ESCOM and play competitive games for them. If he refuses fine and good I will just be training with them so that I keep fit,” said Wadabwa, who joined the team last year.

The former ESCOM net buster said he was enjoying his career in South Africa and prayed that the situation remain undisturbed.

“I must be frank with everybody and myself, I am enjoying my time here, both inside the field of play and outside. I have no problem so far and I hope things will remain like that,” he explained.

Royal Thanda Zulu finished playing all their league games and they are now waiting to play in the NEDBANK Cup before Wadabwa returns home for holiday.

But another former ESCOM United and Flames’ midfielder Jacob ‘Cobbenjani’ Ngwira says he has no intention of joining any local team let alone his old team during his long holiday.

Ngwira, who plays for Carara Kicks, is already in the country and hinted that he is back home to rest and not play for football.

“I will be going for gym and jogging every day and that will keep me fit by the time I go back. I am here to rest and not engage myself in competitive playing,” he told Nyasa Times.

According to The Guardian Series of East London, the 26 year-old Malawian footballer fundraises in London to help needy people in his native land, for whom life is as different from his own as a professional footballer as can be imagined.

Malawi is wracked by AIDS and high infant mortality.

“Things you and I take for granted, like going to the doctor on the NHS, going to the dentist, it’s not as simple as that out there,” Mkandawire told The Guardian Series.

“Sue Ryder do a lot of health work in Malawi. They recently set up a clinic in north Malawi, which is where I’m from.

“I still have a lot of family over there, so it’s a cause close to my heart” he said. “I do as much as I can to help people from my country,” he said.

Mkandawire efforts help Sue Ryder Care to run a eight strong team of health professionals in Malawi.

According to The Guardian Series report, they take healthcare into the Malawian countryside, in off-road vehicles protected by guards.

Nurses dispense vital treatment and advice from beneath the cover of trees to 6,500 patients who trek from miles around.

Victoria Shewell of Sue Ryder Care called it “a huge task.”

“Tam is the face of Malawi Village Sponsorship in London,” she said.

“He has been wonderful for us. He’s really enthusiastic and he helps a lot.”

The Malawian footballer who also takes charge of a team in the Sue Ryder International Cup, coming soon, said: “Hopefully we can improve things by raising awareness and raising money.

“That’s the aim,” said Mkandawire, who is the second child of a British aid-worker and a Malawian man.

“I realise I’m lucky to be a position where I can make a living out of something that I love doing,” he said.

“There’s lots of people not in that position, and I’m very aware that I want to give back to the community.”

“It’s something that I’m happy to be involved in, so that I can do my bit.”

Aston Villa took the lead after five minutes when James Milner scored from the penalty spot.

Villa’s coach Martin O’Neill was however displeased with the referee’s decision not to caution Nemaja Vidic for the agriculture tackle against Gabriel Agbonlahor which resulted to the penalty.

O’Neil told Sky Sports that the referee’s failure to caution Vidic was “a poor decision” and turned to be “a major point of the match.”

Micheal Owen cancelled the lead before Wayne Rooney came off the bench to net the winner.

Rooney, who replaced Owen, powered a header past Villa’s goalie Brad Friedel with 16 minutes to go as United claimed their fourth League Cup final success.

Man United manager, Sir Alex Fergusson admitted that mother luck smiled at his team to win the trophy at Wembley.

He said:”In the main we were the better team but credit to Aston Villa’s performance. In the last 10 minutes when they started shoving up that big brigade of theirs it was like the Alamo. They had a go. Dunne had a back post header and missed altogether. You need a bit of luck in these situations.”

Ferguson was more interested in looking forward to the next trophy, whether it be a 12th Premier League title or his third Champions League trophy.

He said: “We show time and time again this club has got the determination. They don’t give in. It’s a good quality to have and you’ll see that in the last part of the season.

“It was a good result for us on Saturday with Chelsea losing. Arsenal are back in the frame with the easiest programme on paper. It will be an interesting run-in.”

And on winning his fifth league cup he added: “You’ve got to enjoy it, that’s why we are in it. You have to accept what you can get in this life. Winning this trophy is special to us. Any trophy is good.

“You’re in this game to win and I appreciate everything we have achieved as a club and I appreciate the luck I’ve carried. That’s important.

“I’ve lost finals and it’s not easy when you lose a final. The only way you can enjoy Wembley is winning.”

And on the trophy tally he added, tongue in cheek: “Hopefully it will be 33 this season. Might be too old to wait for next season.” -Additional reporting Press Association Sports
