Catholic University of Malawi students suspected of murder after pub row

Some Catholic University of Malawi (Cunima)  are being suspected  of murder  which has triggered tension between students and villagers in Masikini T/A Likoswe in Chiradzulu, after a protracted battle resulted in the death of a villager, Dan Kachingwe, last Saturday.

Head of of Montfort Police Unit, Peter Chikwemba,  explained that disagreement between students and the villagers started at a drinking joint located close to the university.

Chikwemba said when disagreement over beer became uncontrollable, the students left the pub heading to the university but met the villagers on the way where they fattally attacked the Kachingwe.

”It was at that point when the suspected three students severely injured one villager and killed another and swiftly rushed into the university campus,” said Chikwemba.

According to Chikwemba, the injured villager is still battling for his life  at St Joseph Hospital in the district.

Chikwemba said investigations are underway to find out the third student involved in the murder.

He did not disclose the names of the suspected students, saying it may jeopardize their investigations which he said were at advanced stage.

Cunima Registrar, Nelson Chibvumbwe was non-committal on the matter.

Kachingwe, 36, a cross border businessman, hailed from Njobvu village, T/A Changatha in Thyolo and was buried in his home village.

The problem is not the location of the college. In fact being in the rural setting would mean a conducive environment for study, away from the hustle and bustle of urban activity. I have been to this college and noticed how students guzzle, and are generally unruly. As others have commented, this is a capital offence. Let the law take its course

  13. Judge Judy says:

There was a disagreement, people fought. Others lost the fight and died, others won the fight and went away. Don’t make it look like the students were following the villagers in their respective homes to kill them. Mind you they met the losers on their way to the campus, maybe the villagers were waiting to pounce on the students and they reacted in self defense. But since apha munthu, let the law take its course

  17. Lindani says:

How many beer bottles were they fighting over? Investigate that as well. It could be only 2 bottles amounting to Mk900. Only. If its not beer bottles find out the real reason behind this. Such kind of feud errupt when higher learning institutions are not very welcome in the vicinity.

  20. redeemed says:

You have not yet stepped into the real world , but your hands are already stained with innocent blood. I wonder what your future is likely to be. Today’s youth behavior is becoming more and more wild, here in RSA we are lucky when a day goes by without hearing of a student who have murdered either his fellow student or a teacher. Most teachers are exiting the profession in fear of their lives inspite of the government’s effort to attract more teachers by offering an enormous salaries. This situation had compelled the government to resort to importing of teachers.

  21. Steve says:

so sad for students to be involved in. condolences to the bereaved family.

  22. chatonda says:

ARREST THE STUDENTS INVOLVED. THEY ARE A BAD EXAMPLE TO THE UNIVERSITY SOCIETY. THE LAW SHOULD APPLY UNIFORMLY. THESE WILL NOT HELP THE COUNTRY BUT CONTINUE TO KILL MORE IF LEFT SCORT FREE. [PUNISH THEM NOW THAN LATER TO DETER OTHERS FROM THE MISCONDUCT
