The assertion was made at Bingu international Conference in Lilongwe during CHAM’s 50 years celebration under the theme,”Our Golden Jubilee: healing and serving for a healthier Malawi’”.

Speaking at the event Secretary General for Malawi Council of churches Bishop Dr Gilford Matonga said the institution’s existence has been of great significance in the health sector.

CHAM is the second largest provider of health care in the country and provides about 37% of health care services in the country. and has 181 facilities which include 11 training colleges, 20 hospitals, 20 rural hospitals, 90 health centres with maternity services and 40 health centres without maternity services.

He said CHAM personnel have displayed dedication to their work in ensuring that patients are well taken care of, adding that teachers who have been empowered to train nurses and other health personnel have worked hard to prepare the students.

“I am proud to mention that CHAM colleges train about 80% of mid-level healthcare workers in Malawi. This is a significant effort in capacity building as it has helped to create notable improvement in the healthcare practitioner-to-patient ratio in Malawi,” said Bishop Matonga.

He further explained that Malawi’s growing healthcare needs call for public and private healthcare providers to work more closely as one integrated health system.

“I am glad to say that this year CHAM signed a new 5 year long Memorandum of Understanding agreement with government to work together in ensuring quality health care services.

“We are here to support government’s efforts to ensure Malawians continue to access health services, even in hard to reach areas,” he said.

He however challenged Ministry of Health to live up to the MoU signed as marginalizing CHAM facilities during the planning and implementation of the health sector strategic plan only makes the achievement of health for all Malawians an impossible dream.

In an Interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA) Executive Director for CHAM, Andrew Chikopa said as CHAM they are happy to celebrate the day to discuss their achievements and challenges, and map how these can be addressed.

He pointed out as one major challenge, lack of enough staff in most of their health institutions and the growing need to train more personnel so as to match up with the growing population.

In his remarks Board of Directors at CHAM Rev. Dr Timothy Nyasulu said the theme of the celebrations serves as a reminder to all as it is one of the missions in the kingdom of God.

“We give all praise and honour to God alone as we humble ourselves in promoting the healing ministry of our lord Jesus Christ,” said Rev Nyasulu.

Christian Health Association of Malawi was established in 1966 to advise the churches on health issues. The first and oldest health institutions to operate under CHAM are St Annes’ Hospital in Nkhotakota and Malamulo Mission Hospital in Thyolo. Both hospitals started their operation in 1902.
