Change title: Dr Uladi Mussa celebrates doctorate honour from Cypress University

Peoples Party (PP) acting president Uladi Mussa is this Saturday celebrating the honorary doctorate degree  conferred on him by  from Cypress University of the United States of America.

Uladi: PP president now is Dr

An excited Mussa confirmed that he received a letter from the Kansas based university that he would get an honarary doctorate in Political Leadership.

“They did research and found out that I am the deserving politician for this honarary PhD. This is an honour to me, my family and my party,” said Mussa who sounded over the moon.

His highest academoic qualification is Malawi School Certificate of Education which he obtained at Salima Secondary School.

Mussa thanked the university for confering him the honarary degree, saying it was exciting that he was getting the degree whilst still young.

“Our universities should emulate this, they should give the honourary degrees to deserving people not people who are tired. This will fatten my CV,” he said.

Mussa started his career as United Democratic Front lawmaker then regional governor for the centre in the 1990s and has since served in various cabinet portfolios in Bakili Muluzi, Bingu wa Mutharika and Joyce Banda administrations.

“ My hard work and tenacity has been greatly rewarded. I have always been a firm believer in hard work and I am extremely grateful for the recognition,” said Mussa.

Dr. my ass. Why are you niggas obsessed with these titles? Actually this is typical of the uneducated.

  2. M Sizini says:

There are 193 people in this country who hold one of the highest honors or titles to which any Malawian can aspire: “Honorable”. This is a title that is conferred on every Member of Parliament as soon as he or she has been elected – and before they have done anything to deserve it. It is conferred in the expectation that each MP will work honestly, conscientiously, and honorably to improve the legislation under which Malawi is governed. If our MPs would try harder to deserve their title, this would be a better country for every Malawian.

The Malawi Constitution, Section 51 (2) states: ‘. . . no person shall be qualified to be nominated or elected as a Member of Parliament who – (c) Has, within the last seven years, been convicted by a competent court of a crime involving dishonesty or moral turpitude.’

It is clearly the intention of our constitution to keep dishonest, unprincipled people out of Parliament. However, it is equally clear that we fail dismally to implement this intention. We all know MPs whose behavior is characterized by ‘dishonesty and moral turpitude.’ Unfortunately for us, the legislature conspires with the judiciary to ensure that dishonest MPs will rarely be convicted. In Malawi, the wheels of justice turn exceedingly slowly, so that justice is at best delayed, and thus denied. Consequently, our ‘Honorables’ can indulge in dishonorable behavior with impunity.

It is worth reminding ourselves that this title which is bestowed upon all MPs means ‘possessing high principles’ or ‘worthy of high respect’. They do not need to sacrifice years in disciplined academic study or effective community leadership. All we ask of them is that they remain worthy of the title by conducting their parliamentary duties in a principled manner. Instead, however, many of them earn our derision for their cynical abuse of the power and opportunities that their position confers upon them. By their behavior they bring down contempt not only upon themselves, but also upon the national institutions of which they are part.

Our leaders want to possess the title ‘Honorable’ without the need to behave honorably, so it should not surprise us that they want academic titles without the need to study for them. What they want is ‘lipstick on a pig.’ As former-Senator Obama once said: ‘You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.’ Unearned honors and degrees do not turn sows’ ears into silk purses. Our leaders need to realize that they cannot hide their cupidity behind a screen of bogus honors and spurious titles.

Increasingly, we see them for what they are.

Koma yes, even dogs have started receiving PhDs

  4. proudly northener says:

Dr….???? or doctor???? or may be you have been doctored mr mussa? and you are happy with it…am very sorry
To be doctored or to doctor is otherwise to cheat!! or to falsify….. hahahahaha MSCE zimene imachita nzomvetsa chisoni….

  5. ANALYST says:

And it you the media who pamper these people by always addressing them as “Dr”. Can you stop this nonsense of identifying anyone with an honorary PhD as Dr please??? Just look at your headline Nyasatimes “Call him Dr Uladi Mussa” – do you think these people will stop crying for these PhD with such kind of pampering you are giving them? Once the media stops that, no one will be excited with these things! If you agree, I hereby give you a draft list of those you must stop addressing as Dr:
    1. Joyce Banda
    2. Ben Phiri, personal assistant to the Zicheche man
    3. Getrude Maseko Mutharika, wife to the Zicheche eating man
    4. Bakili Muluzi, father to Atupele Muluzi who is in the Zicheche cabinet

    1. Boko says:

You people don’t seem to understand, and it appears your thinking is dazed with vendetta for some individuals and their affiliations. This is an honorary degree. Are you saying people should not be honored for what somebody thinks is a great achievement? If you think someone has not achieved anything dignifying, that is your own problem, and don’t impose your malice on people who have spotted honorable feats in some individuals! The British honorary system even goes further by knighting achievers with accolades such as “Sir”, and there should be nothing wrong with this. Most of you have mentioned JB as part of your comments on this story. Why? What’s the connection? Most of you, even with your academic PhDs, will never come close to what JB has achieved in life! Ask APM or Chaponda. In fact, most of you are simply stupid, hateful and malicious imbeciles that are part of the forces impoverishing Malawi.

      1. Smarten up - don\'t dumb down says:

Boks – you are the pot calling the kettle black.

      2. Azipiliqueta says:

nkhani ndiyoti honorary degree sitimagwirila ntchito kwina, its just an honour. Munthu wamkulu sungakwere pachulu mkumati imeneyi ndikhoza kukafusilira ntchito kwina. Most of us we wish we can achieve the famous side of jb, but we dont dream of her infamous side #cashgate

      3. ANALYST says:

Boko, you have completely missed the point with your useless barking! We are not against people being awarded honourary degrees! In fact, I would also love to get one (but from a reputable university on a good cause) – but what we are against is this behaviour of addressing them as Dr – that is not acceptable with honourary degrees! The academic rule is that the institution that awarded that person the degree can address them as Dr – not any Jim and Jack! Barack Obama has several honourary degrees – you will never hear the American media and the American people addressing him as Dr. Barack Obama! In fact, the American style does not even use the title ‘Your Excellency, the State President, Bla, bla, bla”, the US president is simply addresse as “Mr President” which is very modest! Wake up you Boko, or whatever you call yourself with your Zicheche-eating behaviour from this stupid behaviour!

        1. Mgonapamhanya says:

In fact even in South Africa, their president is addressed as “Mr President”.

        2. Wachimwa says:

Analyst, this is not America mind you. Dr Ulada Mussa has it so what?

          1. ANALYST says:

So what are you saying “Wachimwa?” Your point doesn’t make the slightest sense!

      4. Logic says:

kikikikikikiki. Boko defending mediocrity kakakaakkakakakkakaa. Boko sounds like he’s not intelligent at all.

  6. Dr Tambala says:

Cypress university is not a university at all and it has nothing to do with politics. Google it. This is a prank Mr mussa

  7. The Commentator formerly known as Obanda Joyce Nti says:

Kkkkkkkkkkkk. Isn’t this the fake university which gave Ben Phiri that other fake degree? Kkkkkkkkkkk

  8. chodziwadziwa Bsc (Poly), Msc, PhD (Oxon) says:

What a shame!! Celebrating mediocrity. Do you know what it takes to earn these monikers…ask PhD holders who have toiled for a minimum of three years to earn such an accolade. It is a long and lonely journey no matter what field you are doing…I can see there is current obsession of titles and inclination to claim them among the Malawian politicians, a symptom of deep seated mediocrity performance and identity crisis.

  9. Peter wa Mussa says:

Why are Malawians obsessed with tittles ?

  10. Mgonapamhanya says:

PP ndiye ndichipani chamanthongo bwanji? Just imagine: JB president with MSCE as highest qualification obtained from St Mary’s, Uladi Mussa , vice president with MSCE as highest qualification obtained from Salima Sec School, Kamlepo Kalua, second vice president with MSCE as highest qualification obtained from Mitundu secondary school. Now, what do you expect from such low grade leaders: Phd for JB, Phd for Uladi and next year a pHd for Kamlepo. Vivant Malawi!

    1. Chititimbe says:

Hahahahahaha you have made my day mpaka “pHd”?

  11. Thitherward says:

My wife, Dr Sweetlips Thitherward, would like to comment on this great honor that has been conferred upon the recently elevated Doctor of Political Leadership:

    Dear Dr Musa
When I first read of your good fortune, I confused Cyprus with Cypress. However, one of my sons pointed out that, while Cyprus is an island nation in the Mediterranean Sea, Cypress refers to a coniferous tree commonly found in European graveyards. This intrigued me, and I decided to do a little research. This is what Cypress University says about itself:

“In session since 2012, Cypress University is an annual conference that . . . focuses on cost containment solutions related to employee benefits.”

Their website makes it clear that Cypress University is an event, not an institution, and it is organized by Cypress Benefit Administrators.

Sadly, Mr Musa, it would appear that some insensitive and malicious person has been ‘pranking’ you. You are as much a Doctor of Political Leadership as I am the Queen of the Night.

In these days of independence and self-assertion, you should try to dampen your desire for overseas validation. Aim for local acclaim. I should feel privileged to confer upon you the Order of the Big Cheese. Just send me an email, and $1,000.

I hope that my wife’s comments prove to be helpful.
