Channel O beckons Malawi’s talent show E-Wallet winner

The country’s solo digital satellite television (DStv) provider, MultiChoice Malawi says that the winner of this year’s E-Wallet Talent Show has a chance to have his or her music on Channel O, Africa’s leading music videos channel.

The company’s sales and marketing regional manager for the south, Chimwemwe Nyirenda, hinted this in an interview with Nyasa Times.

He was speaking two weeks after MultiChoice Malawi made a pledge during the previous eviction show in Blantyre that they will sponsor recording of a song and its video for the 2012 E-Wallet winner.

“As MultiChoice Malawi, we feel there has been lack of continuity in these competitions. To date, we can’t trace where winners of the past competitions are or what they have achieved after winning,” observed Nyirenda.

“We want to bring a change and give these people an opportunity to take a meaningful step further,” he added.

“We will pay for his or recording which will be done by Tapps Bandawe. The song will also have a video which we will facilitate to have it on Channel O, depending on the type of music.”

The rebranded E-Wallet Talent Show, previously Pop Idols, unearths talent in singing, rapping and dancing and it started with 26 contestants, drawn from the across Malawi, competing for K500,000 and a recording deal.

So far, 16 contestants have been evicted from the competition and the next eviction show will be taking this Saturday at Sunbird Capital Hotel Marquee in Lilongwe.

Meanwhile, organisers of the show have said the competition is now tight among the Top 10 contestants, saying “it’s stiff on the singers’ side and the dancers.

There are 7 singers, including female contestants Yasinta Bodole, Tawonga Kanthungo, Hanna Kadammanja and Wakhumbachi Kalua as well as the males Guise Pemba, Goma Nyondo and Mick Monyo.

The dancers it’s neck to neck between The Elements Dance Crew and the Floor Steppers while the only surviving hip-hop contestant, Eric Matewere, is in a class of his own.

According to Anthony Kafuwa, the show’s projects coordinator, “this week’s theme is the ‘contestant’s favourite’ where each of them has been given a chance to perform a song of their choice unlike in the previous shows where songs were selected for them.”

During the show this Saturday, apart from the contestants’ performances, patrons will also be entertained by local stand-up comedian of the moment Andrea Thonyiwa, popularly known as Mr. Jokes.
