Chaponda prides himself as ‘bulldozer’, ideal for agriculture ministry

Newly appointed Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development George Chaponda has touted himself as bulldozer and the best to head the messy ministry.

Chaponda: I'm the bulldozer

Chaponda: I’m the bulldozer

Speaking at a political rally on Friday in Nchalo, Chikwawa, Chaponda said contrary to media reports, he was the right person for the job saying he will work hard to ensure that Malawi gets its lost glory of a food basket for the region.

“I have read that some people are saying that I am not fit to be minister for agriculture because I am not a bulldozer, that is not true Your Excellency. I will work to ensure hunger ends in Malawi,” said the former Foreign Affairs minister.

The opposition accused Chaponda of being insensitive to the country’s ailing economy because of his endless global trotting.

Mutharika fired  Thyolo South-West member of Parliament (MP) Allan Chiyembekeza, who served as Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, on an undisclosed reasons although some commentators say it is due to the ever falling agriculture sector blamed for the persistent food shortages.

Mutharika assured Malawians that through Chaponda, who is also Democratic Progressive Party vice president, Malawi would now produce enough food as was the case before.

Chaponda has been reportedly been earmarked to succeed Mutharika as President, a claim the minister downplayed.

  13. Klass-Jan says:

Kangamile Zowazowa, there is no way u can say that those working at LUANAR are lazy. There is lots of research that is conducted at Bunda, very good innovations. But how can they be adopted when the government says it has no resources to have those great innovations tried by farmers? The government need to provide enough resources to ensure that farmers in the communities know about the new farming techonologies, & techniques that can lead to increased production. If you want to appreciate the good work that Bunda is doing take your time and visit the institution… u will surely understand. Technologies & good farming techniques can be developed, but the Ministry of Agriculture should take the initiative (using their extension workers) to ensure that farmers in all parts of the country understand these technologies. Osati subsidy ya chimanga every year… it will take us nowhere

  14. Parallel Market says:

    Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development has two key functions;
Agriculture (including irrigation) and Water development. Dr. Chiyembekeza did well on Water Development. He helped sort out water issues in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu, Nkhatabay and even on Likoma Island. He deserved a part on the back indeed.

However, on the Agricultural front he faced challenges. He is a good leader who can be reserved as a future Speaker of Parliament!!!

Hey from the foreign capitals to the maize field eish! you need to be given an ovololo

  16. kampini says:

  17. Tengu says:

Make him prime minister and let him supervise other ministers!

  18. Luanar has failed the country for 51 years? We never experienced this perpetual hunger nonsense under kamuzu……and expecting the university to tick when they are heavily underfunded, 50% of students dropping out, no funds for research are provided, ma K577bn cashgate mukukana kufotokoza wa ndiye mudziti ndinu a bulldozer? Pu-leeeeze! Just go and steal subsidy money uko basi. We have very low expectations from you…I would say let’s wait and see….

  19. Kangamire Zowazowa says:

This guy speaks the language of entrepreneurs and is fearless. Many people may distaste his brush and Blanton talk but he actually can show a track record of successful enterprises and academics that most of those ministers including the president would be challenged to show.
I can’t wait to see the heat in the ministry of Agriculture.

LUANAR – get ready to answer some tough questions. What do you think about Malawi’s never ending farming?
As a laboratory for Agricultural innovation, what can you do to change the trajectory?
We know you have failed us for the past 51 years, that is no longer important, we must deal with the next 51 years. If I were Chaponda, my number one act would be to challenge those lazy professors at LUANAR to send us well prepared graduates ready to deal with our problems not just manage our famine

  20. LIGHTON says:

Our Civil Service Does Notneed A Minister Who Is Soft, CHAPONDA can chase these people and bring them to work.

  21. chigo says:

matama autsiru amenewo, kunjaku kuli climate change.

  22. caddon says:

Chaponda is not only a bull dozer. He is a radical, a sweeper, and result oriented man. He is fearless. You only need to track his record when he was minister of local government – he swept vendors out of the streets; when he was minister of education – he closed private secondary schools in the country that did not live up to standard; when he was minister of foreign affairs – he trimmed embassies and audited embassies. He is coming to the ministry of agriculture at a time when there is total mess ranging from cashgate and food shortages. You therefore need a fighter. He is fit for the job. We are proud of you, George.
