The chiefs are now happy with the bill because they are assured that they lose no power at all. And so, apparently, POWER is all the chiefs are concerned about in this issue. Not concerned about how this bill favors only the citizens with enough disposable funds to afford registering the land! Many questions still are unanswered; one of the most important one being:- -so when a person registers the real estate, and dies as we all eventually will, is it acceptable for anyone outside the clan (if the owner so favors) to inherit that land? This bill will certainly… Read more »

Now people will start saying “Mafume a gulidwa” instead of questioning your inept MPs.

This is how you lose elections, villagers are not stupid, they know that most of the issues in this country end up being about political gain and not issues at hand.

You just hit the nail! Mps are supposed to be law savvy at the minimum. The government can not take the initiative of explaining this bill to the Chiefs in the interest of soon to be affected citizens. The opposition erred by inciting the Chiefs that they are going to loose their powers while omitting the economic factors that affects more citizens. With this bill only one person registers family land and legally he owns it and Chiefs can’t do anything even if they know the truth. Soon courts will be infested with complaints regarding family land

So the govt passed the bill without sensitising the consumers of the same bill. Chiefs are now being sensitized as an after thought? Malawi is a failed state. Do you know the cost of registering a piece of land, let alone to hire somebody from surveys to put beacons on the land. This bill is no different from the chiphwisi laws.
