Malawi’s leading mobile partner Airtel announced Tuesday the appointment of Amadou Dina as acting managing director following the resignation of Saulos Chilima who has since joined into front-line politics.

In a statement made available to Nyasa Times,  Airtel Africa Chief Executive Officer Christian de Faria said the change follows “the resignation” of  Chilima, “who has left the organization to pursue other personal interests.”

The statement further revealed that the new Managing Director will be announced in due course.

Amadou was until his appointment Finance Director for Airtel Malawi.

Chilima was picked by Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) Peter Mutharika for the position of running mate.

“I have to resign at Airtel as well as a board member of various companies such as Inde Bank. I will become a technocratic vice-president once voted into power,” Chilima declared Monday.

He explained that when he was approached with the offer, he took some time to consult his colleagues, family, and religious leaders.

“I sacrificed my job to partner Professor Peter Mutharika, it is a big risk, not easy decision,” conceded Chilima in an interview.

Chilima, born on February 12 1973, was appointed Airtel Malawi managing director in August 2010.

Malawi will hold its tripartite elections where it will elect President, members of parliament and councilors on May 20 this year.

A total of 7.5 million Malawians have registered to vote in the first ever tripartite elections.
