Chilima warns Mutharika’s wedding well-wishers: No favours in return

State Vice President Saulos Chilima on Saturday issued a stern warning to ‘well-wishers’ to support the wedding of Malawi’s new President, Professor Peter Mutharika, who will marry former lawmaker Gertrude Hendrina Maseko Saturday June 21, that they should not expect government favours in return.

Chilima is chairing the wedding committee which includes some other top government officials including State House chief of staff Peter Mukhito.

According to Chilima, the private ceremony will cost K38 million (about US $95,000) and that “well-wishers will fund the wedding.” He said the wedding ceremony will not use any money from government.

And speaking on Saturday at Saint Patrick’s Parish in Area 18 in Lilongwe during a “thanks giving” mass stressed that the State wedding will be using contributions from the two families – Maseko and Mutharika.

He said individuals who donate money during such events with the gratification aim of getting favours from the government should know it won’t work like that this time around.

“I have said that the money for the wedding will be sourced from the two families and do not bother donating your money if your aim is to get favours,” said Chilima.

He said some people – whose identities were not mentioned – had already started calling him as chairperson for the wedding committee, promising to donate astronomical figures.

“I have told them to keep their money,” he said.

“What they want is to get favours like government tenders in return and that’s what Professor Peter Mutharika’s government is fighting against and we will win,” said Chilima.
He said the Mutharika administration is keen to fight corruption tooth and nail.

Many ‘well-wishers’ are willing to hand over large cheques because they want influence but Chilima has sprayed doom for them in the DPP regime.

Peter Mutharika’s brother, late Bingu wa Mutharika also married while in State House – his former minister Callista Chimombo in 2010 three years after losing his wife of 30 years Ethel.

Peter has also been a widower for 30 years after losing his first wife, Christophine, from the Caribbean. They have three children between them.

Maseko has just lost her Balaka North parliamentary seat to musician Lucius Banda. She served as an MP during the older Mutharika’s administration.
