Chimpeni, Mbilizi triumph in Old Mutual golf

Lilongwe based William Chimpeni and Blantyre based lady golfer Roza Mbilizi had all the reasons to walk tall in the corridors of Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) when they scooped top prizes in the Old Mutual Golf tournament played on Saturday at the club’s 18-hole golf course.

A total of 80 golfers from LGC and its sister clubs graced the day-long tournament, which was played on Par Boogey format.

Chimpeni was top in the men category after posting an impressive score of +3 score. He received a trophy and a Callaway golf bag from Old Mutual.

“I thank Old Mutual for sponsoring one of the finest golf tournaments at Lilongwe Golf Club this year. I had a good game from start and did not have any pressure on the back nine. This is my fourth golf title this year’s and I am looking forward to two more glories before the year-end,” said Chimpeni after being decorated by the sponsors.

Trailing the champion was veteran Clement Chilungulo, who had the same score but lost it on the count-back. Former LGC board chairman William Matambo came third after counting out youngster Aadil Parker on +2.

In the ladies’ section, Mbilizi was the clear winner with a score of +4, just ahead of her runner-up Maria Cho who scored +3.

Regina Mwanza dominated both the Longest Drive and Nearest-the-Pin for ladies with A Moloseni and Parker sharing the men’s Longest Drive and Nearest-the-pin respectively.

Speaking during the presentation, Old Mutual’s Group Chief Executive Officer Chris Kapanga hailed all the golfers and customers for gracing the event.

“The whole idea behind the sponsorship was to interact with our customers and get their feed-back o the services we provide and we are very much impressed with the response we have received.

“We are definitely coming back with another tournament next year and we are also looking forward to a new partnership with our central region customers as we open the MPICO Gateway Shopping Mall, which is
an initiative of Old Mutual and its subsidiary MPICO,” said Kapanga.

He said the Gateway Mall, which will be the biggest and finest shopping mall in Malawi will be opening its doors before Christmas.

Mindful that when golfers tussle on the golf course, it is the greens that suffer most, the Old Mutual Group CEO presented a K200,000 cheque to the club for the greens’ maintenance.
