Civo oust Bullets in Standard Bank Cup: Reach finals
Civo United cruised into the finals of the Standard Bank Cup on Thursday after a thoroughly deserved win over a desperately disappointing Big Bullets at Kamuzu Stadium.
The Civil Servants 2-1 win was a triumph for coach Oscar Kaunda as his side produced a performance of style, composure and grit to come from behind and reach their first Standard Bank Cup.
As a consequence there will be no dream Standard bank finale to his Big Bullets coach Mabvuto Lungu this season.
The Bullets tactician was hoping to make his first cup final appearance for the club in the Standard Bank cup.
Chiukepo Msowoya send Bullets into the lead through a header but the dangerous little-known Raphael Phiri levelled in the second half for Civo before he scored the winner after cool finish.
Phiri is on loan from Karonga United.
Lethargic Civo United mounted a rally of sorts late on when Yamikani Fodya cleared off the
line from Gerald Nkungula’s shot.
Bullets failed to tick in all the departments, especially on the midfield where Henry Kabichi was tamed well before he was substituted for Eneya Banda.
Banda also failed to rule the midfield, as he lacked composure, and confidence.
Chiukepo Msowoya and Jaffalie Chande were also tamed well by defenders in John Lanjesi and Emmanuel Zoya.
Yamikani Fodya and Dalitso Sailesi were also out of form as their coordination left a lot to be desired.
Civo , however, were not to be denied and the final whistle sparked scenes of joy among
players and supporters alike.
The normally animated Oscar Kaunda had been calm on the touchline throughout but all his emotions poured out as he celebrated another trip to Standard bank .
“In a game of football, there are days when you perform and there are days when you don’t. Today wasn’t our day. They have beaten us clean,” technical director Billy Tewesa accepted defeat after the match.
Civo coach Oscar Kaunda said they managed to inflict a painful defeat on highflying Bullets because they were at their best.
“We saw the way they were playing and discussed a strategy at half-time in the dressing room and the players did what I told them. We look forward to the final,” Kaunda said.
Civo now wait for the winner of the second semi-final between Blue Eagles and Mighty Wanderers.
