Timau: Why Bingu is still so right as President of Malawi
A growing number of people and this includes political analysts are calling for immediate leadership change in Malawi.
So who do you get in now then? John Zenus Ungapake Tembo (JZU)? Fine.
We told you. The only one man who can wisely take control of Malawi is JZU, you yelled at us. You said that he is a murderer and very tribalistic. But we bet, Tembo could have made a better leader because he has got points to prove to Malawians.
Who next? Bakili Eleson Muluzi? They told you. Bakili is a democrat at heart, a listening leader, ready to take advice from people. You said no! He is a thief, very corrupt and ruthless with his young democrats.
Well, there must be someone else then. Goodall Kayiwonanga Gondwe? What if he doesn’t want and above all, you claim that he is a northerner. So, who? Gwanda Chakuamba? Oh please!!
LEGAL BATTLE
The case for prosecution for the incumbent President, Bingu wa Mutharika will go something like this: He over looked the rule of law. Self centred, re-introduced the much loathed University selection method called quota system, dividing Malawians by introducing a splinter group called Mulakho Wa alomwe. The man appointed people from Mulanje and Thyolo (his tribesmen) in all strategic positions. He has been calling for his brother to succeed him in 2014. Oppressing the opposition through uncalled for arrests.
Then there is the case of defence which will go something like this: The opposition stressed him too much in the first five years. The economy of the country has improved—don’t worry about DPP (Diesel Petrol Palibe) issues; these are just the effects of the credit crunch from the developed world affecting Malawi now. His leniency has led to people talking carelessly hence the arrests.
He is not a nepotistic leader; Bingu hired Ken Zikhale Ng’oma as chief of staff, Ralph Kasambara as attorney General, Mary Nangwale (nee Northerner) as Inspector General of police, Tumalisye Ndovi as Director of the Anti-corruption Bureau. All these people either played up or were rejected by an opposition dominated Public Appointments Committee.
Then there will be mitigation in which Bingu would say something like this: Am 76 and a widower. I look after children and one of them has just been married. This is my last term in office.
So, what will the jury say?
Perhaps the phrase “the devil you know” plays the trick here.
All we need as Malawians is to get united and support the President. In spite of everything, Malawians gave him the vote. The people entrusted with positions should deliver. They should work for the poor Malawians and not for their own pockets and families, in that way, our country will be at peace and no one will talk of Mulakho Wa alomwe.
It seems to many the much talked about success in the first five years of Bingu is slowly vanishing away.
All right, so sack Bingu, start all over again, bring in Harry Mkandawire’s ideas or Brown Mpinganjira’s propaganda or support the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) rebels and start once more. We say, compromise with Bingu and continue.
We know that this will be to the annoyance of a growing number of people and political analysts who still feel change is the only solution.

We want fresh pipo age between 35 to 49. can’t you see Obama the youngman. Timafuna titayima koma a Malawi nyanga.GOD help us.
Bingu learn to hear people’s voice.Nzeru zawekha anaziphikira mmasamba.Had i known kuti you will behave in such away you would’nt see my vote. Kakaka pa mulakho, kakaka pa quota kakaka pa flag change. you were a good man 5years ago not now ask anybody even street children will tell how worse you are now.
Nyasa Times, there you go again with your chauvinistic thinking. Is Joyce Banda not the person who the law has prescribed as the temporary successor should need arise? I think it is extremely rude of you not to mention her name on your wish list. And you say “better with the devil we know?” No no, we must look at the machinery, the system, not necessarily the person (at least in this case). That is why we must join hands to defend and safe guard the constitution, the engine of our national machinery -which must remain firm with deep roots to enable take over by any other Malawian – if not JB after her bridging period.
By the way, the next president will be none of the recyled cases you have on your list. I would go for Mthirakuwiri above!
It is a sign of being short-sighted politically for Nyasa Times to begin campaigning for Bingu after his miserable performance with his majority. It is also a big mistake to argue that Bingu should be removed now. Comparing Tembo, Mpinganjira and Muluzi to Bingu is also a deliberate propaganda to begin whitewashing the serious blunders this Mose wa Lero is making. Let him wait and meet the young blood that UDF, MCP and Nyondo will present in 2014. Otherwise zolinga za Bingu for becoming the Malawian leader zadziwika: strengthening tribalism in order to make the presidential tribe unbeatable as it enjoys state resources. Nobody from the opposition can fight that especially when elections are also electronically doctored.

The best and possibly the only notable thing that Bingu has done to Malawi as a nation so far is reduction of hunger, period. On other things, he still remain to be rated (i.e. developments at regional level as he wishes to call, balance of appointments, biasness towards one tribe -Lomwe, hatred towards northerners – not a secret at all now, etc. etc.).
May I take this opportunity to ask Nyasa Times to give us notable developments that have taken place here in Malawi per region. Please, don’t metion those to be done since there is no surity that they be will be done. For example, in northern region, road projects are done at snails pace (i.e. Karonga – Chitipa road is at possibly 0.5 to 1.5 kilometers per annum)while others are none starter. Considering the same projects in other regions especially in southern region, work is done very fast since covers loyal family. Another thing to point at is the victimisation of Standard 8 students from the north who this year (2009) have seen the bad picture of Bingu. Most of the boarding secondary schools in the north had been occupied by students from other regions and none from the north has a place in secondaries in other region unless a child of a prominet DPP official. PANJA BINGU ANANENA KUTI NDITHANANAWO AKUMPOTO (remember when he was talking fource statistics about university entries, Mzuzu Corner at CHANCO, Staff at Mzuzu Uvinesity), these are very good examples of bad plans for Bingu towards northerners. Yes, like Jews during Aldorf Hiltral, northerners will keep on being persecuted by Bingu but time will come when the trueth will shine.
Going by the title of the story, I for one, my man is Bingu regardless of some of his bad attituteds towards some people. I really don’t see any one to take over from him upto 2014. I like the man but doesn’t mean that I should always be praising him when he does mistakes, NO. Infact, a good leader is the one who listens to critisisms which can help him to be the best leader. PA NKHANI YAKUMPOTO, BWANA MUNALAKWISA NDIPO MWASOGOLERA ANTHU ENA KUDZUDZA ANTHU AKUMPOTO NGATI SIMUZIWA. INUYO MUKAMAKHALA NDI GOODAL, KACHALI and THE LIKES MUSAMATI ZONSE ZILI BWINU. ANTHUWO YANGAKUWUZENI CHILUNGAMO CHIFUKWA AKUDYA NANU BWINO OCHEPAWO. MUKAPUSA, ANTHU AKUMPOTOWA MUZAWASOWA 2014. REMEMBER, THEY ACCEPTED TO DIE FOR YOU DURING YOUR FIRST TERM TOUGH TIMES. THAT OPPRESSION YOU ARE DOING ON THEN NOW WILL NEVER MAKE THEM DULL BUT INSTEAD WILL MAKE THEM EVEN MORE STRONGER -TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT.
I only hope the views of Achemayi do not represent views of the majority of the northerners otherwise then you have no case. Let us have Bingu continue whatever he is doing. If anything he is the best devil according to you.

Go there and witness yourself.
I would like to differ with some contributors on this column.According to my own assessment pple of north want things to go go in their favour and this tantamount to greed and selfishness. For instance many cabinet posts were allocated to the North as compared to the Centre yet i have never seen pple form Centre complaining.Wake up its not time to cry but to forge ahead.Went things go not in favor give thanks to GOD because tommorrow it will be you.
ARE YOU STILL IN UK, SEMBE GONDWE? THANKS FOR REMEMBERING HOME. I AM UR FRIEND FROM MALAWI
