Community blame MP Mzomera over abandonded Mzimba health centre

The community around Kamwala in Mzimba District have faulted their legislator for Mzimba Hora Constituency, Reverend Christopher Mzomera Ngwira, for failing to complete the construction of a health centre that was started in 2012 near St Mary’s full Primary School in Mzimba-Hora Constituency in the district.

Failure by the MP to complete the facility appears to be a blow to the communities as they have to endure a long distance of up to 20 kilometres to access health services at the nearest health centre.

Some of the people from Kamwala who spoke to Malawi News Agency (MANA) Wednesday said in some instances, pregnant women deliver while on their way to the health facility.

Group Village Headman Chigoga Jere faulted the MP, saying since the 2014 tripartite elections, Ngwira has never visited the area to appreciate their challenges.

“We have never seen the MP since he was elected in 2014 and we wonder why he does not come here to discuss development issues,” he lamented.

The traditional leader urged the MP to complete construction of the health centre to ease challenges that people in the area, especially pregnant women, face to access health services.

However, while admitting that the facility has not been completed, Rev Ngwira attributed the delay to lack of funds.

The legislator deemed it unwise to ask him about the project, saying it involved a lot of money.

He said was currently in discussions with government so that it could come in to complete the project.

“The proposal to have a clinic at St Mary’s was initiated in 2010 and was supposed to finish in 2011, but it was not approved until 2012,” Ngwira said, adding the project started with Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

He assured the communities that work would resume in the next two months hoping it is included in the 2017/2018 national budget.

“For your information, it is not only this health centre, we have also Lukwelukwe Health Centre in my constituency which has also delayed,” he added.

Reverend Ngwira trashed the assertions to the effect that he had never been to the area, saying he had always visited his constituents.
