A Ward Councillor in Mangochi identified as Shadreck Chibondo Banda has been robbed K2.8million of Local Development Fund in a Lodge in Mangochi, Nyasa Times can reveal.
This happened on February 10 2016 in the lakeshore district of Mangochi.
Although the Police are yet to come up with an official version of the circumstances surrounding the matter or make any arrests, a source within the Service has confided that it is the Councillor himself who reported the case.
Nyasa Times understand that the Police have opened a docket against unknown under MG/CR/56/02/16 as investigations into the matter.
“This occurred on 10/02/2016 at Mt Lodge in Mangochi at around 19:40hrs and was reported at the Police Station by the Councillor himself. According to his report, he booked a room at the said Lodge with the money kept in his bag.
“Then he was visited by his friends (Councillors) who together with them went out leaving his room locked but when he returned he only learned that the room was open and money stolen. It is said the money was for government and was meant for development for his ward,” disclosed the source.
The 30 year old Mbvumba Ward Councillor whose home village is Binali from the same TA and District was let free although no cash recovery has been made.
Recently, there have been cases of Ward Councillors been involved in financial scams like in Phalombe and Zomba.
