Councilors in Phalombe begging for bicycles from United Purpose NGO

Phalombe Ward Councilors over the weekend begged Non-governmental Organizations in the district to provide them with push bikes for easy transportation if they were to deliver effectively.

Councilors begging for bicycles

The Councilors made the call barely a day after United Purpose (an NGO formerly known as Concern Universal) provided bicycles to all Traditional Authorities in the district as a way of easing mobility challenges that rocked the local leaders.

According to Chairperson of the Council Rex Malata, the Councilors believe that if they were to serve better they should have push bikes on top of the motorcycles that they bought after acquiring government loans in 2016.

However commenting on the call, one Non-governmental Organization leader who opted for anonymity termed the Councilors’ plea “an act of greed and total selfishness”.

“Their request is baseless and outrageous. It is only depicting them as insatiable mortals who shouldn’t even be at the wheels of leadership; otherwise they should be ashamed when begging sometimes,” said the anonymous leader.

Adding to the sentiments, Chairperson of Civil Society Network in the district Gazeri Phiri said it was very surprising that the Councilors wanted to receive push bikes too regarding the fact that they already had motorcycles.

According to Gazeri provision of bikes to community leaders was an activity that was agreed by the NGO based on their project nature, but it did not mean that every NGO operating in the district could buy bicycles for everyone upon request.
