Criminals attack albino person: Malawi Police launches hunt for attackers

Malawi Police in Chikwawa are looking for unknown criminals who, on Friday night, attacked a person with albinism, the latest so far.

Chingwalu: We are on manhunt

Chikwawa police station officer Davie Chingwalu confrmed the attack of 38-year-old Gift Notisi from Ngabu.

The attack comes barely a month after unknown attackers wounded two brothers of albinism in the same area.

Chingwalu said the police have stepped up security for persons with albinism in the district following the new wave of attacks on people with albinism.

Notisi said the attackers hit at around 10pm when they stormed a house he was sleeping.

“They came and put a piece of cloth around my neck to strangle me but I fought off and managed to scream for help,” he said.

He said the attackers wounded his left hand with a machete as they were running away.

Chief Ngabu said the attacks can only stop if attackers are handed down a death sentence.

“Unless perpetrators are given harsh punishment by the courts, these attacks will keep on resurfacing” said the chief.

The government changed laws to accommodate stiff punishment for perpetrators of violence against people with albinism.
