Crisis brews at Carlsberg Malawi as soft drink variety narrows
A snap survey in south Malawi has revealed that the variety offered by Carlsberg Malawi in soft drinks has drastically dwindled for the past two weeks and currently it is only Coca-Cola which is available in retail and wholesale shops.
The company produces soft drinks such as Sprite, Cherryplum, Fanta Orange, CocoPina, Fanta Passion and Fanta Pineapple.
However, contacts at the company’s Makata plant have confided to Nyasa Times that management has decided to finish its stock of Coca-Cola and Fanta Orange by cutting production of the other drinks so as to create demand.
“Balancing of commodities is what is important at the moment so we are only producing Coca-Cola to finish the stock without necessarily generating internal competition,” said the source.
But Competitions and Fair Trading Commission has warned that it will not entertaining acts of hoarding on the market and necessary measures including a statement will be issued to correct the situation instead of depriving consumers of their choices.
