Dan Lu at Mibawa Cafe on Saturday as he gears for ‘So what?’ album launch

One of the country’s Afro-Pop musicians, Dan Lu, will on Saturday be performing at Mibawa Cafe in Blantyre as he prepares to drop his latest album ‘So What?’.

The album, Dan Lu’s third release, will drop on the market during the Christmas week and is expected to be officially unveiled at Mungo Park in Lilongwe.

“Am set to release the album and I want to hype up things ahead of the big day through this show at Mibawa this Saturday, it’s a pre-launch show,” said the singer, born Dan Lufani.

Apart from Dan Lu and his Rockers Band, Afro-Pop singer Maskal of the ‘Ziri ndi Iwe’ fame will also be available at Mibawa Cafe to support his comrade in the industry as he is expected to dish out songs from his previous album ‘Nthawi’ and the latest ‘Umunthu’.

Dan Lu: So what album on the cards

The hit singles in Dan Lu’s album, which are enjoying airplay on the local airwaves include the title track, [Uhule]‘Ndi Mtima’ as well as ‘Sweeter than sugar’ which he features Zambia’s Flex.

After the launch in Lilongwe on 21st December, the singer, who came in the limelight after releasing his debut album ‘Shupie’, a hit single which took Malawi by storm, the singer will be taking the new album to his fans in Karonga and Likoma Island.

“It’s the festive season and this is the moment I have chosen to connect with my fans in such places, it’s my Christmas and New Year’s gift to my fans in Karonga and Likoma before coming back to Blantyre where I will be launching the album next year,” said Dan Lu.

According to the artist, the big show in Blantyre will be coupled with the launch of his ‘So What?’ DVD which he is currently producing and it will be launched in March.

Some of the tracks in the new album, which he also features local rapper Tay Grin, include ‘Banja’, ‘Hosanna’, ‘Kuzuna’, ‘Kusakasa’, ‘Ndivine bwanji’ and ‘Till morning light’.

In an earlier interview with Nyasa Times, the artist said just like his two previous productions, the latest album centres on love. He was however quick to reveal that, “some songs are comforting while in other songs am playing an advisory role”.

“In the last album [the song] ‘Part of Life’ was soothing, both the lyrics and the instrumentation, so in this album I have such songs as well.

‘So What?’ is a song focusing on people who spend time talking about others. I’m advising them to mind their business and dedicate their time to something valuable,” he said.

After its release, Dan Lu’s previous album ‘No Size’ which had the popular track ‘Part of Life’, was one of the best selling in 2011 and it propelled his music career, winning him the ‘Best Afro Pop’ at the 2011 Malawian Music Awards.

Other popular songs that made him a household name included ‘Mphete’, ‘Nsanje’ as well as ‘Driver’ and Dan Lu is confident that the album in the offing will surpass ‘No Size’.

“Of course being a movement, I just do the music and people choose which one is the best, but I believe this album is on top. As an artist, I’m growing hence my music has to mature as well,” said the singer who emerged from Lucius Banda’s Zembani Band.

The launch at Mungo Park is expected to feature both local and international acts including Lucius Banda, Tay Grin, Piksy, Kumbu, Hope Lu, Kumbu as well as Zambia’s Flex and South Africa’s Rio.

‘So What’ has been produced by Malawi’s top producers namely Tapps Bandawe, Percy Manyozo, Andy, Lulu and Zambia’s Ben Blazer.
